Can't login after update [Solved]

Postby hunt_mat » Fri Nov 25, 2011 21:11

Hi,

I just did a large update and afterwards I found that I could get to the log in screen but when I went into kde I was thrown back into the login screen. This was the case for all the display managers except fluxbox which I could log into but then I couldn't actually do anything.

So I burnt Sabayon 7 to a DVD and booted using that to see what was going on and I went to the partition where I had my Sabayon system and I can't seem to find anything. I suspect that it is all there but it is annoying. Is there anything I can do? I suspect thatthe mounting of the drive was the problem.

Did you check that opengl is set correctly?
Code: Select all
eselect opengl list

try at the login screen
alt ctrl f1
Log in as root, then my first choice would be
eselect kernel list
uname -r
kernel list would show the selected kernel with a * while uname would show the kernel you are booted into ... do they match?

for eselect kernel list I get: linux-2.6.39-sabayon for uname -r I get 2.6.39-sabayon

The names are different but the numbers match, is this necessary a problem?

No, should not be an issue
At this point, without knowing what all went in your update, would use kernel-switcher to try and fix.

Code: Select all
kernel-switcher --help

Code: Select all
kernel-switcher list

you would see all the kernels available, would install all needed modules and update grub.
Updating kernel is a bit extreme for this issue, at same time it will update your kernel and all needed drivers. I suspect a driver issue here. We could play cat and mouse and try to guess which driver it is, chances are kernel-switcher will take care of it and in sabayon terms, 2.6.39 is quite old.... I would want to update the kernel.

That being said, 2.6.39 worked well, no reason for it not to work now.
At the login screen, alt ctrl f1 and log in as root.
equo update
equo install equo entropy
equo upgrade
equo conf update

Pay attention here, equo install equo entropy should install a couple packages, if you just upgraded, equo upgrade should install nothing unless it was broke, equo conf update if it ask for action from you .... may be all you need.

I suspect something as little as equo conf update, may be wrong.

there are some threads in the forums about this issue (and similar issue)

make sure your gcc.-profile is set to 4.6.2 version

press CTRL+ALT+F1

check your gcc-profile
Code: Select all
# gcc-config -l

set new gcc-profile to 4.6.2
Code: Select all
# gcc-config 4.6.2

Code: Select all
# source /etc/profile

restart xdm
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/xdm restart

I hope this fix your problem

Genfools suggestions worked and I am now back on Sabayon and everything is a bit sluggish and I might require a fresh install.

Thanks guys
