Gnome 3 Hosed by Latest Update

Postby gstrock » Tue Oct 04, 2011 16:16

I'm running Gnome 3.
Always use entropy.
No special repos enabled.

On Oct 3rd, 2011 I updated my system.
I rebooted and when I got past the
login prompt I was greeted with the
message: "Oh, something went wrong.
Please logout."

If I don't log out, I have an Applications
menu at the top left. Any programs I
start from there open in a window without
a title bar or min-max-close buttons.

the window cannot be resized or moved.

I've tried removing and installing:
- gdm
- gnome
- gnome-session
- gnome-desktop

all to no avail. I'm using Fluxbox instead.

I thought I would wake up today, Oct 4th,
and find new updates available to fix this,
but nothing new.

Any ideas?

Having the same problems and I have tried a re-install of more graphics packages. This is a real problem.

Problems here as well. My laptop cannot recover from suspend to ram with out restarting x. Several times I have had no choice but hard reboot as I can't get to a terminal.

My wife's desktop machine at home has the same issue, but on reboot this morning had the above mentioned warning that a fatal error had occurred and the system was unable to recover.

Shame is I was really beginning to enjoy gnome.

Thanks for the tip, but it did not correct my issue. Your symptoms also seem different than what I have going on.

After waking the laptop from sleep I can get the desktop to appear, the machine will connect to wireless, and the touchpad is responsive, except for the ability to make any selections. The only way I have found around it is to ctrl, alt, f1 to a terminal, stop xdm, and restart xdm. (which at the moment, after logging back in, only gets me to the sabayon splash screen). A second stop and restart worked.

Also odd is that the screen 'unlocked' upon waking in the sense that the password prompt is gone - just straight to desktop.

From a fresh start up, everything works fine.

Any other thoughts?

Sorry, I was actually trying to address the original posting from gstrock who does have symptoms like mine. I have had some problems in the past with suspend, and usually disabled it in the BIOS ACPI setting. Sometimes changing the ACPI setting to "S1" (only) helped. I think Sabayon comes with vbetool installed by default, and that may help.

The most recent updates should solve your problem (I had them as well).

Cheers

Any special things to do with regards to that "latest update" remark?

I've done a full `equo upgrade --replay`. I updated the repositories and found that Gnome was listed as an available package; so what am I using now then? Anyway I installed Gnome and the problem is still there

The update did not only contain one package.

My upgrade procedure looks a little different.

Code: Select all
equo update
equo install entropy sulfur equo  --relaxed
equo conf update
equo update
equo upgrade --ask
equo conf update

Followed by

Code: Select all
equo deptest
equo libtest

in case it was a larger update.

Cheers

Oh, but installing Gnome actually pulled in a number of dependencies. Apparently not enough though.

I'll try the described routine later tonight. Many thanks...
