gnome after install nvidia-settings doesn't work

Postby knube » Fri Aug 26, 2011 23:05

Hello,

I am new user of Sabayon Linux.

I installed system from Sabayon Linux Gnome DVD. Everything was OK. Then I install nvidia-settings package with dependences and Gnome does not work. Xdm works, Fluxbox works but when I want to start my Gnome instance I see only gray background. No panels, no icons...

Thank you for answer and I am sorry for my bad English :)

Hi

Be sure that nvidia is enabled correctly. Become root and check by executing:

Code: Select all
eselect opengl list

you should see something like that:

Code: Select all
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   nvidia *
  [2]   xorg-x11

If the nvidia-entry is NOT marked with a star like in the above example change it with:

Code: Select all
eselect opengl set x

replace x with the number behind your nvidia-entry. reboot.

Just met with the same problem here. Running `Xorg -configure` I found that another kernel module had claimed the Nvidia card

Code: Select all
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sat Aug 27 17:27:37 2011
List of video drivers:
   nv
   nvidia
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.39-sabayon/video/nvidia.ko): No such device
(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module. Please check your
(EE) NVIDIA:     system's kernel log for additional error messages.
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error, 0)
(++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
(EE) NV: The PCI device 0x10de1244  at [email protected]:00:0 has a kernel module claiming it.
(EE) NV: This driver cannot operate until it has been unloaded.
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
  Configuration failed.

The conflicting kernel module is the nouveau driver, which I thought I had removed together with all the other drivers I'm not using. In fact, according to equo the driver *was* removed, but somehow the kernel module had been left behind

Code: Select all
~ # ls /lib/modules/2.6.39-sabayon/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/
nouveau.ko
~ #

Just move that folder away and reboot

Annoyingly, after todays updates the graphical console was gone once more. Introducing the new kernel, several unwanted kernel modules not belonging to either system or world (including nouveau) came along with it.

Please fix that with the next kernel upgrade.
