GDM: disble users list

Postby svantoviit » Thu Aug 25, 2011 16:52

How to disable the users list (faces) in gdm?

I have tried to do it with gconf-editor, then through editing /etc/gdm/custom.conf and even greeter-schemas file but with no success...

Is there a working solution?

hi there,

I believe it's been done through gnome-control center.

hit ALT+F2 and type
Code: Select all
gnome-control-center

you find it under systemadministration,
something like login screen, where you can change the startupbackground and apply themes.
and then, under the 'users' TAB, you can select/deselect 'show list'

found on ubuntu forum;
http://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/2010/06/08/ubuntu-security-remove-the-user-list-menu-from-the-gdm-login-screen/
don't know if it works:
Code: Select all
sudo gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults \
--type bool --set /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list true

or edit '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'
place under section '[greeter]'
Code: Select all
Browser=false

according to gnome.org:
http://projects.gnome.org/gdm/docs/2.18/configuration.html#greetersection

Thanks for the next tip... unfortunately, my HDD made his last turn before I could try it RIP :(
Bought a new one and switched to XFCE , since I don't like the new Gnome 3.
The XFCE spin don't uses gdm, so I can't confirm, if your last suggestion works.

Long live backups and software alternatives ;)
