GNOME3 - nvidia

Postby raifi1234 » Sun Aug 21, 2011 10:12

I just updated to kernel 3.0.0-sabayon.
sukfur is 1.0 rc_41.
The last working configuration was kernel 2.6.39-sabayon
with nvidia 275.09.07 incl. gnome-shell (gnome3).
This did not last for long ;(

Seems that there is no matching nvidia driver
for kenel 3.0.0 up to now.

Only twm is working ;(.

sure there is....
Code: Select all

Is over there, but if Nvidia packages are installed this kernel didn't pull any Nvidia driver instead.
With Sulfur the manual selection of the package this bring the "eselect opengl" and "eselect kernel" selection in the right way.
(Kernel 3.0 and Nvidia on Opengl)

Thanks, but I am not very experienced with Sabayon/Gentoo.
So, could you please give some more help:
1. I reinstalled (by sulfur after doing equo rescue generate.
2. Sulfur shows the following system files to be merged or deleted:
Proposed Target
._cfg0000_music /etc/init.d/music
._cfg0000_main.cf /etc/postfix/main.cf
._cfg000_settings-data-conv... /etc/xgd/autostart/gsettings-data...
._cfg000_grub /etc/default/grub
._cfg0000_main.conf /bluetooth/main.conf
Usually I prefer merging, but now?
3. The orphaned files had been shown after reinstalling, but I did not save the list.
How can I rebuild the list (most were gnome 2.x files?
4. The system is going on to set hostname to "sabayon".
In /etc/hosts I set hostname to "amd64".
sulfur says that the protected files /etc/conf.d/hostname,
/etc/sudoers and /etc/exports have been ignored.
How do I set hostname according to my setting permanently?
5. /etc/defaul/grub:
I changed trimeout to -1, and all systems (3 other linuces) work fine, so I do not
intend to merge the proposed file (see above). Correct?
6. The "strange boot message" regarding the file /usr/sbin/repository-services-daemon.example
is shown up to now (see my post in the 64-bit-forum).
7. Could you tell me the exact coding with eselect to solve the disk manager problem
(gnome3 replacing twm)?
Thanks in advance!

open a terminal and enter as root:
Code: Select all
equo update
equo install entropy equo --relaxed
equo upgrade

if you have multiple kernels installed, select the correct kernel:
enter:
Code: Select all
 eselect kernel list

looks like this:
Code: Select all
bwg-inc patrick # eselect kernel list
Available kernel symlink targets:
  [1]   linux-2.6.39-sabayon
  [2]   linux-3.0.0-sabayon *

if kernel 3 is not selected (marked with a * at the end)
select it by enter: eselect kernel set 2

im not sure, but did you already installed the nvidia-driver for kernel 3?
if not, enter:
Code: Select all
equo install nvidia-drivers

and, (if preferred) :
Code: Select all
equo install nvidia-settings

Run eselect so that the X Server uses the nVidia GLX libraries:
Code: Select all
eselect opengl list

looks like this:
Code: Select all
bwg-inc patrick # eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   nvidia *
  [2]   xorg-x11

make sure nvidia is selected.
if not, select it:
Code: Select all
eselect opengl set 1

Make sure your user is in the video group by typing:
Code: Select all
gpasswd -a youruser video

(replace 'youruser' with your login name)
you can enter (as root) the following:
Code: Select all
glxinfo | grep direct

if it says: 'direct rendering: Yes'
than you should have a working nvidia-driver WITH dri/dri2 on kernel 3
restart X

as root, edit /etc/conf.d/hostname :
Code: Select all
nano -w /etc/conf.d/hostname

change HOSTNAME="localhost"
to HOSTNAME="amd64"
save the file ( CTRL-O or F3) and exit ( CTRL-X or F2)
restart X

6. The "strange boot message" regarding the file /usr/sbin/repository-services-daemon.example
is shown up to now (see my post in the 64-bit-forum.

Thank you for detailed answer.
Applying your hints nothing (but the corrected hostname) changed and I am not discovering
any errors except that one shown above.

There is only the tiny windows manager (twm) running.
According to joost (64-Bit-Forum) this is wanted behaviour.

Seems that item 6 (see above) must be solved first. Could you send me the above mentiones
file by mail ( [email protected] or [email protected] )?

UPDATE
This is from Toorox Linux distro
"Attention should be paid to the fact, that GNOME3 needs accelerated
graphics support. If the video driver doesn't support this, the desktop
will start in a "Fallback Mode" which can't represent all of the functions
and the "Look & Feel" of the new GNOME-Generation. This will be
happen for example if you have a nVidia graphics card. But this is no
problem - click on "Systemconfig" in the black panel (see picture below)
and start "nVidia Drivers". This will download and install the official video
driver for your card. Then the desktop will restart automatically with
graphics acceleration."

I just compared the xorg.conf files under Sabayon 6 (64-Bit) and
Ubuntu 11.04 (64-Bit) ON THE SAME MACHINE.
There is no (significant) difference.
unity is working fine with Ubuntu Linux, so should gnome3 do!
Both need graphics acceleration (I think).

I think the nvidia driver 275.09.07 has not been compiled correctly
for the 3.0.0 (r7)--sabayon kernel for 64-Bit machines.

With the 2.6.39-kenel all had been working fine!

So we shall wait for a kernel update.
