Can't work out how to install this package

Postby gav989 » Sun Aug 14, 2011 18:57

hi all, trying to install the driver for my wireless card. i found the driver here:

http://packages.sabayon.org/show/ralink ... -show-what

but can't for the life of me work out how to install it. I can't seem to find it in entropy or portage.

What am I missing here?

it's not in entropy.
you can search in portage:
as root:
Code: Select all
emerge --search ralink

output:
Code: Select all
Searching...
[ Results for search key : ralink ]
[ Applications found : 2 ]

*  net-wireless/ralink-rt2860-firmware
      Latest version available: 11
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of files: 3 kB
      Homepage:      http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Linux.html
Description:   Firmware for Wireless Ralink RT2860PCI/mPCI/PCIe/CB(RT2760/RT2790/RT2860/RT2890
      License:       AS-IS

*  net-wireless/ralink-rt2870-firmware
      Latest version available: 8
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of files: 2 kB
      Homepage:      http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Linux.html
Description:   Firmware for Wireless Ralink RT2860PCI/mPCI/PCIe/CB(RT2760/RT2790/RT2860/RT2890
      License:       AS-IS

and then:
Code: Select all
emerge ralink-rt2860-firmware

don't forget to:
Code: Select all
equo rescue spmsync

to tell entropy what you did

That's the sort of solution I had hoped for, but i get this output:
Code: Select all
Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "ralink-rt2860-firmware".

emerge: searching for similar names...
emerge: Maybe you meant any of these: net-wireless/rt61-firmware, sys-kernel/linux-firmware, net-wireless/libertas-firmware?

Do I need to add a different overlay or something?

One thing that might matter is that when I try to update portage I get
Code: Select all
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U *] sys-apps/portage-2.2.0_alpha51 [2.2.0_alpha37] USE="less%*"
*** Portage will stop merging at this point and reload itself,
    then resume the merge.
[blocks B      ] <app-admin/logrotate-3.8.0 ("<app-admin/logrotate-3.8.0" is blocking sys-apps/portage-2.2.0_alpha51)

 * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
 * installed at the same time on the same system.

(sys-apps/portage-2.2.0_alpha51::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    portage

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- net-wireless/broadcom-sta-5.100.82.38-r1::gentoo (masked by: Broadcom license(s))
A copy of the 'Broadcom' license is located at '/usr/portage/licenses/Broadcom'.

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Sorry, I'm not very good at portage...

oh yeah,
sorry, i forgot to ment that it's in Sabayon overlay.
do the following as root to add the Sabayon overlay,:
Code: Select all
layman -a sabayon

and:
Code: Select all
layman -S

to sync all overlay's.
then you can repeat the steps in the eaarlier post.

OK I've sorted that problem out (needed to add sabayon overlay, embarrassing I know). However when I try to emerge I get the following problem:

Code: Select all

Lots of 404, is there anything I can do about this?
