X will not start after 4.7 update...[Solved]

Postby greendave8 » Sat Aug 06, 2011 17:26

Hi again guys....

After updating kde 4.7 today, my system will not boot into X. All I get is a flashing cursor. The problem I think lies with the nvidia driver. I have tried to re-install nvidia 275.09.07, but it is masked.

I am on kernel 3.0.0. Any ideas how to fix this, as I cannot log into kde , gnome or anything else at the moment.

Help is appreciated

Has the same problem this morning after updates.
Figured out that the nvidia drivers where not installed properly. The installed driver and usermode number are mismatched
Did "equo install nvidia-drivers " entropy insisted on installing an old version of the nvidia driver (173 something). Even when i did "equo install nvidia-drivers-275.21#3.0.0-sabayon it installed the old drivers. I solved my problem by using Portage.

emerge git
emerge --sync
layman -a -sabayon
emerge nvidia-drivers
equo rescue spmsync

The whole process takes well over an hour, Be Advise

But got my system up and running.

This should be in the "Entropy, Equo Packages Manager " section of the forum

I'm having the same problems too. When I tried to update drivers manually through entropy, I received the following message:
Code: Select all
sabayon vernon # equo install nvidia-drivers-275.09.07#2.6.37-sabayon

Here are the drivers currently installed:

Hopefully it will be tweaked in the next few days. I'm a bit leery of portage and would prefer to use only entropy, so I'll wait. Thanks,

Same problem here. But I have now only a wifi encrypted connection. I reinstalled this night :( with the same /home. I unmasked nvidia-drivers and nvidia-userspace and no problem with KDE 4.7 after that

Nvidia drivers unmasked as of August 7, and I was able to install normally through entropy. Many thanks to the admins and maintainers.

I helped someone this morning in irc with this masked nvidia issue, had a hard time getting it to unmask.
Was fully updated and still was masked. In the end we got it by opening sulfur. Click on sulfur in the upper left hand corner, tick the advanced mode button. Then select masked option in title bar, and unmasked it there.
They were now able to install the driver.

Having searched thru a number of threads, I did this:

emerge git
emerge --sync
layman -a -sabayon
emerge nvidia-drivers
equo rescue spmsync

I was then able to boot into the old kernel 2.6.39, updated some more updates and then redid the whole eselect kernel thing. I am now booting into the 3.0.0 kernel with everything working, kde 4.7 et al.

I am worried that after updating I may get the same problems in the future (I dont remember having these probs on older Sabayons), and wonder why the 275 Nvidia driver got masked.....

Main thing is its all up and running again....Thanks for help and advice along the way :D :D :D
