buggy networkmanager in KDE

Postby speedyx » Sun May 22, 2011 8:06

Do you know that network manager in KDE can't share the network connection throught wifi, in the time there is no problem in GNOME?
I tested with sabayon 5.5 K 64bit and G 32bit.

The funny thing is that it works brilliantly for me: wireless, wired and mobile broadband modem. I'm using all three in the location I'm working at the moment (office and the hotel). Wireless both unencrypted and WPA-encrypted.

Here are the precise versions of NetworkManager and KNetworkManager I'm using at the moment on my main laptop:

Code: Select all
$ eix -I networkmanager
[U] kde-misc/knetworkmanager
     Available versions:  (4) 4.4.0_p20110415!t (~)4.4.0_p20110513!t (**)9999!t[2] (~)9999-r1[1]
        {aqua consolekit debug kdeenablefinal +networkmanager wicd}
     Installed versions:  9999(4)!t[2](11:03:48 16/05/11)(consolekit -aqua -debug -kdeenablefinal)
     Homepage:            http://kde.org/
     Description:         KDE frontend for NetworkManager

[U] net-misc/networkmanager
     Available versions:  0.7.2-r1[1] 0.8-r1 (~)0.8-r1[1] **0.8.1-r2[1] (~)0.8.1-r6 (~)0.8.2-r1 (~)0.8.2-r2 (~)0.8.2-r2[1] (~)0.8.2-r6 (~)0.8.2-r6[1] (~)0.8.2-r10 {avahi bluetooth connection-sharing (+)dhclient dhcpcd doc gnutls kernel_linux nss resolvconf}
     Installed versions:  0.8.2-r9(04:56:19 08/03/11)(avahi bluetooth dhclient gnutls kernel_linux nss -connection-sharing -dhcpcd -doc -resolvconf)

[I] net-misc/networkmanager-vpnc
     Available versions:  (~)0.8!t (~)0.8.1!t (~)0.8.2!t {gnome}
     Installed versions:  0.8.2!t(19:25:12 12/02/11)(-gnome)
     Homepage:            http://www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager/
     Description:         NetworkManager VPNC plugin

[1] "sabayon" /var/lib/layman/sabayon
[2] "kde" /var/lib/layman/kde

Found 3 matches.

The networking hardware in my main laptop:

Code: Select all
# lspci | grep Wireless
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection
# lspci | grep Ethernet
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Device 1063 (rev c0)

NetworkManager and nm-applet work perfectly with wireless (WPA-encrypted) and wired networks on my old Gateway Solo 9300 laptop with E17, not KDE. The latest versions from the Entropy repository are installed in that case. I can't confirm to you the versions installed on that laptop as I am not at home for a couple of weeks, but the Atheros wireless hardware specification is given in my post: Re: How do I get wireless D-Link DWA-645 working?.

If you're having trouble, I suggest you file a bug report in the SL Bugzilla with full details of the packages installed, your hardware, and any networking-related error messages in /var/log/messages and dmesg.

I'm now using NetworkManager 0.8.4.0-r1 and that is working fine too.

Have you ever shared an ad-hoc connection?
