Hell is freezing over: embrace, extend, extinguish

Postby lxnay » Mon Nov 20, 2006 17:16

Can anyone see it? I am talking about Novell-Microsoft long-term-threat-and-anti-Linux agreement.
Embrace, extend, extinguish - Microsoft philosophy

"In most contexts the strategy is a three part process consisting of the following steps:"

1. Embrace: Microsoft develops software substantially compatible with a competing product, or implementing a public standard.

Take only the first words: "Embrace..." Linux!. But what's Linux? It's only kernel. And what about other BSDs then? You can run KDE/GNOME/X/OpenOffice/KOffice/Firefox/etc/etc on top of them too.

2. Extend: Microsoft adds and promotes features not supported by the competing product or part of the standard, creating interoperability problems for customers who try to remain neutral.

Uhm... who said, IP protection for Novell customers? Yes, it does not cleanly apply, but we're very close.

3. Extinguish: Microsoft's extensions become a de facto standard because of their dominant market share, marginalizing competitors that do not or cannot support Microsoft's extensions and creating an obstacle to new would-be competitors.

Here, they'll fail. Linux's source code is not owned by anyone. It's the community, stupid!

GNU+Linux = Linux Kernel + GNU userspace tools
Linux = only the kernel.

Postby Darksurf » Tue Nov 21, 2006 17:49

What are they trying to accomplish?? (they=microsoft) What do they want from the linux community, their greatest enemy? They don't think they can crush us or take us over do they? What are they going to do exactly, hope this helps their market share??? I bet it will just hurt SUSE and Microsoft. I hope they both burn!!

Linus Torvalds has described insisting upon GNU/LINUX as 'just ridiculous'. He certainly disagrees. I'd call it Linux as you don't call Windows 'Office/IE/Windows' do you?

MS is doing a similar thing with OpenXML which is a blatant rip-off of OASIS OpenDocument which is an ISO standard yet still MS persues EMCA standardisation for OpenXML.

Microsoft should make their selfs useful and help make drivers besides flooding the linux community with competing existing programs.
