Intel drivers depend on KMS. They won't work without it.

Even when the resolution is specified as a kernel boot parameter?

For joost: I assume that's why adding nomodeset resulted in a blank screen with, amongst others, the error message "Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel"" etc.

For Fitzcarraldo: I didn't have the resolution specified for this boot. It hasn't been necessary for 2.6.35 and adding it for the 2.6.38 kernel made no difference.

Glad I don't have any machines with Intel GPUs. One last try: see 'Forcing modes' section in Arch Linux Wiki article Kernel Mode Setting.

I just checked my server and it has a really silly (low) resolution.
It has Intel graphics and a tiny X env. (Sabayon .38 kernel)

Code: Select all
mastermind joost # lspci -k | grep -A3 VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
        Subsystem: IBM Device 0285
        Kernel driver in use: i915
        Kernel modules: i915

dunsurfin wrote:I did consider posting in that thread but ReemZ mentions about "falling back" to the incorrect resolution. I can't get it all. What puzzles me is that it works perfectly with kernel 2.6.35 and below. The problem has been there since 2.6.36 but I just ignored it and kept 2.6.35. Now I'm interested to know what the problem is.
I also didn't add to that thread because I don't have a problem with the backlight dimming.
PS If you feel it is a connected issue I'd be happy for you, or any other mod, to merge the topic. :)

I probably used the wrong term again, my problem is that as soon as X starts and my lappy presents me with the graphical login screen, it's in that ugly 1024x768 res, where it should be 1600x900. After login I can launch System Settings and change it back to 1600x900, but upon (re)boot it's the same shite all over again.
Another difference with your situation is that on my end is doesn't matter which kernel I boot, I've had this problem ever since I had the lappy and installed SL. iirc, that was the .33 kernel.

As for chucking two problems into one thread, yeah my mistake, I thought they'd both be minor problems and easily solved by something stupid old me overlooked again. Guess I was wrong

Thank you all for your help. I'm afraid that nothing has worked. There appears to be some problem between kernels after 2.6.35 and the Intel GPU. I shall have to look at an alternative when I've saved a few pennies but, in the meantime, I am quite content to use kernel 2.6.35.

Edit: Just found that it's not practical to upgrade the GPU on a laptop. :(

I suggest you file a bug report to the guys who write the driver: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/ (they may even already have an answer).

I shall do so as soon as I've got my head round the bug reporting link. :)
In case anyone is interested the logs for the 2.6.38 are available here http://www.sabspoilerayon.plus.com/file ... -11.tar.gz (remove spoiler)
