Installing 5.4 from USB

Postby nothingtoseehere » Fri Dec 17, 2010 11:06

Hi everyone. I'm trying to make a bootable usb drive to install Sabayon.
I've tried dd commands and unetbootin with cdx, gnome, lxde, and xfce
with no luck. I got a "no operating system" message when I tried to boot
up. Is there a net install disk? What's the proper way to make sab boot
from usb?
Thanks
Andrew

Try another USB device, some just do not work and some do... Strange, but true.

Ok, thanks svantoviit. Is dd fine to use or do I need unetbootin? I've gotten so far as the
"loading live environment" screen with unetbootin but it craps out and says that there's no
media.

I tried my lexar and my sansdisk 8gigs with ext2's on each with unetbootin 494
and neither worked. The dd command I used was dd if= *path to iso* of=/dev/sdb.

Am I doing something wrong or is there something else I can try?

Thanks again.

According to the UNetbootin Wiki, your pen drive must be formatted as FAT32:

Requirements ¶

1 GB or larger USB drive, formatted as FAT32 (most USB drives come formatted as FAT32 by default, but if you need to format it, on Windows, go to My Computer->right click your USB drive->format, or on Linux, use GParted or another partition manager)

Supported operating systems: Windows 2000 and above OR a modern Linux distribution

and that is what I have always done.

I am trying to do something similar, but is there no way to boot a 5.4 iso file directly like you can Ubuntu 10.10 or System Rescue CD? Here are three Grub 2 entries, One for System Rescue and Ubuntu that works and the latest attempt to boot a Sabayon 5 is that doesn't...

Code: Select all
menuentry "SystemRescueCd" {
  loopback loop /systemrescuecd.iso
  linux (loop)/isolinux/rescuecd isoloop=/systemrescuecd.iso setkmap=us docache dostartx
  initrd (loop)/isolinux/initram.igz
}
menuentry "Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop ISO amd64" {
  loopback loop /ubuntu-x64.iso
  linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/ubuntu-x64.iso noeject noprompt splash --
  initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
}

menuentry "Sabayon Linux 5.4 KDE ISO" {
  search          --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 7c59-3b96
  loopback loop /sabayon5.iso
  linux (loop)/boot/sabayon root=/dev/ram0 initrd=/boot/sabayon/sabayon.igz init=/linuxrc cdroot doslowusb looptype=squashfs max_loop=64 loop=/livecd.squashfs splash=silent,theme:sabayon CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 quiet --
  initrd (loop)/boot/sabayon.igz
}

It does the initial load, but then can't find the image or find the root fs? Any tips.

I think I may boot a Live CD and poke around for some locations to see what I can find...but, maybe one of the packagers might read this and give me some tips...;)

I really want to use Grub 2 to set these up and plan to sell them to give folks a chance to try Sabayon!!!

I got Sabayon 5.4 to run in a Muti-boot Grub 2 configuration on a USB stick. First I installed Sabayon on the USB stick with Unetbootin. Then I installed grub2 on the stick with:

Code: Select all
grub2-install --force --no-floppy --root-directory=/media/MULTIBOOT-1 /dev/sdb

Edited the gurb.cfg file as follows:
Code: Select all
menuentry "Sabayon Linux 5.4 KDE" {
  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 7c59-3b96
  linux /ubnkern initrd=/ubninit root=/dev/ram0 aufs init=/linuxrc cdroot looptype=squashfs max_loop=64 loop=/livecd.squashfs splash=silent,theme:sabayon cdroot_type=vfat vga=791 console=tty1 quiet --
  initrd /ubninit
}

Then added the SystemRescue and Ubuntu iso files on the root of the drive and boot them from grub with loopback:
Code: Select all
menuentry "SystemRescueCd" {
  loopback loop /systemrescuecd.iso
  linux (loop)/isolinux/rescuecd isoloop=/systemrescuecd.iso setkmap=us docache dostartx
  initrd (loop)/isolinux/initram.igz
}

menuentry "Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop ISO" {
 loopback loop /ubuntu.iso
 linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/ubuntu.iso noeject noprompt splash --
 initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
}

to find the UUID of your USB drive type:
Code: Select all
# blkid

from a shell.

Whew.... :mrgreen:

Hey

I have done it for 2 weeks with Unetbootin.

You only have to check if your stick is formated with fat32 and then you can start the process.
Perhaps you have forgotten to change the entry in the bios. The stick have to come before your harddisk.

develpoer23 is right :) You forgot to choose in bios from which disk system must start. You must choose USB stick :)
