Black screen after installation [Solved]

Post by gongon » Mon Oct 04, 2010 23:12

Hi.

I installed Sabayon 5.4 KDE for 64 bits on my PC. Booted from the DVD with no problems, but after installing on my HD the X server doesn't start. The only thing I get is a black screen with a white cursor on the top left of the screen.
I have a Nvidia 8600 gt graphic card.

Can you get to a console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F2 etc.?

Try the following experiments:

1. Boot the LiveDVD and, at the boot menu, press F5 and add the kernel boot parameter xdriver=nv

2. Boot the LiveDVD and, at the boot menu, press F5 and add the kernel boot parameter xdriver=nvidia

3. Boot the LiveDVD and, at the boot menu, press F5 and add the kernel boot parameter xdriver=vesa

What happened in each of the above cases? Can you get to a log-in screen and log-in OK?

4. Boot the LiveDVD without making any of the changes above, log-in, open a Konsole/Terminal window, log-in as the root user, enter the following commands and paste the output here:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver
equo search nvidia-drivers
equo search xf86-video-nv
equo search xf86-video-nouveau
equo search xf86-video-vesa
5. Then chroot to you HDD installation using the procedure given in the SL Wiki article HOWTO: Restore Grub2 (ignore the parts about installing Grub2) and then repeat the commands given above under Item 4 and post the output here too.

I started in recovery mode and after typing my root password I tryed to start X and got this:

Code: Select all

hostname: Host name lookup failure

/usr/bin/startx: line 156: cannot create temp file for here-documment : Read-only file system
xauth: error in locking authority file /root/.Xauthority

Fatal server error:
Could not create lock file in /tmp/.tX0-lock

xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2) : unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error
xauth: error in locking authority file /root/.Xauthority

I don't know if X should be able to start in recovery mode (very noob at this) but maybe this log could help. :)

With Xdriver=nvidia KDE starts with desktop effects 8)

Trying the other options...

With Xdriver=nv KDE starts without desktop effects, as usual.

With xdriver=vesa KDE starts without effects and with a 1024x768 resolution. With the other options, it started on 1600x900 (or something like that).

Did you use one of those kernel boot parameters when you booted the LiveDVD, and then installed from that session? Because, if you did that, it could explain why the re-installation solved your problem.

I don't remember. I booted the Live DVD a lot of times.
