5.4 Install - no custom partitioning. No X server.

Postby nobicycle » Sun Oct 03, 2010 7:02

Hi,

Sabayon 5.4 Gnome disk partitioning appears to have changed relative to 5.3:

1.No custom disk partitioning is offered so I cannot proceed (I need to retain /sda2 my /home). The partitioner offers use: 1. Entire Drive. 2.Replace Existing Linux or . Use Free
Selecting either of these choices goes straight into writing FStab, with no opportunity to review the partitions.

2. Past versions would install fine. This version bombs out with X server configuration problems. The graphics card is an Nvidia 6600.

The second issue is annoying and I'm assuming I can fix it post install. The first issue is a show stopper, unless I back up my entire drive.

Thanks for any wisdom on this subject.

Custom probably is present in the graphical install. I was forced to choose text install because of the X server problem.
So custom install appears to be missing from text install.

have u tried any cheat codes? check the md5sum? burn verify?\

redhat did change that option for text installer, they dropped support for it.

after checked if the ISO, the DVD is good, you may try this...
Boot the live DVD, if you have X problems, you will boot without X.
you will see:

login:

user root as login and password
edit the xorg:

Code: Select all
nano /etc/X11/xorg,conf

and replace you video driver with "vesa" if you have ATI or INTEL or with "nv" if you have an NVIDIA, them, using CRTL+ALT+F7 e and the command :

Code: Select all
startx OR
gdm    OR
/etc/init.d/xdm restart

you may "open" an partially configurated graphical session... the use the graphical installer normally.

Just boot adding to the boot parameters:
Code: Select all
xdriver=vesa

What's your video card?

The graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 6600. No matter what the distro, it never seems to install by default.
Thank you for all the great advice. I've been sticking with 5.3 for the moment, but will try again with 5.4 shortly.

I can't think off any reason to install 5.4 if you already HAVE a working 5.3 installation.

Reason: it enforces housekeeping - is a quick method to dump unused applications, regain root disk space and reduce the system to the essentials.

I have te same problem.
X doesn't run both live or installer mode.
I installed in text mode, checked the drivers but don't work.
In the text mode installation you don't have the choice "manual partitioning", so I prepared a ext3 partition before the installation and the I chose the option "use the linux partition".
This is very weird. Why there's no "manual partitioning"??
The Nvidia driver are correctly installed. Apparently.
My HP pavilion is 6 yars old. I use sabayon there since the 3.5.
I know the issues I can have with the Nvidia drivers. Issues happens if I don't install the proper driver, i.e. nvidia-drivers-97, but this isn't my case.
This is the output.

There was a 5.1 gnome perfectly working on this pc, but past week the HD broke and I replaced. Now I've a new HD, bigger, but sabayon works only in text mode :(
