Broadcom BCM57788 issues +sound [Solved]

Postby wayne128 » Fri Oct 01, 2010 7:27

Greeting,
I am new to Sabayon so I do not yet know how to navigate yet. So I started with a new post here.

I have just downloaded the most recent Sabayon 5.4 x86Gnome and installed on computer.
I have two issues now:

1. My gigabit network adaptor, Broadcom BCM57788 does not have internet access when power up.
Upon applying 3 lines on terminal: modprobe -r tg3, modprobe broadcom, modprobe tg3, it would work.

What do I need to change so that upon each power up the connection will be automatic without typing on terminal?

2. Sound:
When running Youtube movie, video is ok, but no sound.
When I use movie player, mp3, flv, etc, the player does not start.
I check and know the volume on youtube as well as on top task bar are not muted.
What should I do to check and fit the sound?

Thanks in advance for helping.

Here is the computer hardware:

1. Try the following: Re: BCM57780 Broadcom ethernet card module failing to load.

2. Open a Terminal window and do the following:

Code: Select all
$ su
Password: <--- enter root user's password here
# alsaconf

Select your sound card.

Then do the following:

Code: Select all
# alsamixer

Press F6 to select your sound card, turn up the channels and unmute and channels that are muted.

If that does not work, see various posts in the thread Getting PulseAudio to cooperate for further tips.

Hi Fitzcarraldo

Thank you very much for your links and directions
I had the broadcom issue resolved after following the instruction on the Link.
Regarding sound issue, I did not manage to solve the sound issue, until I used the method of killing PulseAudio.
After that it works, the sides issue are
1. Sound is rather soft, compared to other distros on the same computer, I think it is about 6dB softer.
I set the alsamixer to reasonable loudness 77-92. Is there something I need to set?
2. The icon on speaker, previously next to the Internet on top taskbar, has disappeared. How could I get it back ?

best regards,

Sound levels are governed by two things: the low-level ALSA driver and the high-level PulseAudio controls. So adjust the levels in ALSAMixer and also PulseAudio Volume Control. I don't use GNOME these days, so have a look for the latter in one of the menus. If you can't find it, just open a Terminal window and enter the command pavucontrol, which should launch the PulseAudio Volume Control GUI. Regarding the icon, as I don't use GNOME I'm not sure, but it'll be something like right-clicking on the Panel and selecting something.

Low-level (ALSA) sound driver volume control via ALSAMixer:

High-level (PulseAudio) sound control via PulseAudio Volume Control app:

High-level (PulseAudio) volume control via PulseAudio Mixer (KDE) in the Panel:

(Solved) Broadcom BCM57788 issues +sound

Postby wayne128 » Sat Oct 02, 2010 14:07

Hi Fitzcarraldo

Using the right click on Panel>>Add to Panel>>Volume Control>>Add, I got the Icon back.
With that the volumn can be adjusted up.

So this subject is solved.
Thank you very much for helping a new user.. :D

My pleasure. It's worth keeping in mind the information I mentioned about ALSA and PulseAudio, in case you need to adjust them both in future.

When your problem is solved, please click on your first post in the thread and append " [Solved]" to the Subject. Thanks. I'll do it for you this time. Why, and how to add "[Solved]" to your post. Please read.
