Also make sure samba is added to the default runlevel:

Code: Select all
$ su
Password:
# rc-status | grep samba
# rc-update show -v | grep samba
                samba |
# rc-update add samba default
* service samba added to runlevel default
# rc-update show -v | grep samba
                samba |                                        default
#

If you want it to be running now before you reboot, just start the service manually this time only:

Code: Select all
# /etc/init.d/samba start
* samba -> start: smbd...                                                                                                                                                       [ ok ]
* samba -> start: nmbd...

Not sure, as I don't need it for browsing Samba shares on my home network or for letting others on my home network browse the public Samba shares on my laptop, but perhaps you need the mount-cifs package to be installed:

Code: Select all
# eix cifs
* dev-java/jcifs
     Available versions:  (1.1) 1.3.13
        {doc elibc_FreeBSD examples source}
     Homepage:            http://jcifs.samba.org/
     Description:         Library that implements the CIFS/SMB networking protocol in Java

* net-fs/mount-cifs
     Available versions:  3.0.25c 3.0.28 3.0.30
     Homepage:            http://linux-cifs.samba.org/cifs/cifs_download.html
     Description:         cifs filesystem mount helper split from Samba
