No I'll try and get it onto the system as an i7 with 8GB of RAM is too good to waste on 32 bits :)

Just as a point, if there is no "compiz-fusion" command in the live distro (as there wasn't in the August 11 one that I have), and I invoke "compiz-manager", it should start up compiz as normal, if the system is going to work properly, yes?

I don't have time to read through the thread, but are you selecting the relevant OpenGL module for the driver you're using?:

Code: Select all
# eselect opengl list

to see what opengl modules are available, and then:

Code: Select all
# eselect opengl set nvidia

if you are using the closed-source driver, or:

Code: Select all
# eselect opengl set xorg-x11

if you are using the open-source driver.

Yes, it started off with xorg-x11 selected, and I changed it to nvidia, but invoking compiz causes the hung-white-screen-of-death, and console shows an error message along the lines of it can't find xgl, so I'll assume that this particular build of AMD64_G is broken.

What error messages are there in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?

Re: Installation of 64-bit 5.3 hangs on Acer Aspire 5745G

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Mon Aug 16, 2010 11:25

Well, from your log file it appears that you're using the open-source driver (x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv-2.1.17) rather than the closed-source driver (x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers):

Code: Select all
(II) LoadModule: "nv"
(II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so
(II) Module nv: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
   compiled for 1.7.6, module version = 2.1.17
   Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 6.0

So let's have a look at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file too; please paste it here. I don't have your hardware, but my guess is that you'll need to change Driver "nv" to Driver "nvidia" in xorg.conf, uninstall the open-source driver or blacklist it, and install the closed-source driver if you haven't done so already. As I say, I don't have your hardware, but someone in these forums or elsewhere on the Web has probably mentioned in a post the version of the 64-bit closed-source driver that works with your particular model of GPU. Furthermore, if you've tried the 32-bit LiveDVD and that works, you can check the contents of the xorg.conf file after booting that with the contents of the xorg.conf when you boot the 64-bit installation, to see if there are any differences. You can also use the lsmod command to compare what modules are loaded in each case, as well as comparing the contents of the Xorg.0.log files in each case.

EDIT: Have just done a bit of Googling and seen the following: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-disp ... river.html, so there is a closed-source 64-bit driver for your GPU, released on 2 August 2010, version 256.44. I see that that version is in Portage: http://packages.gentoo.org/package/nvidia-drivers (nvidia-drivers-256.44.ebuild). As it's not in Entropy yet you could use the SL Bugzilla to request it to be built, or you could use Portage to build it yourself:

Code: Select all
# emerge --sync
# layman -S
# emerge -1v =nvidia-drivers-256.44
# equo rescue spmsync

The last command above is to tell Entropy what you did via Portage.

I'll have to check that - the log file is from when I started the system up from USB, did "eselect opengl set nvidia", tried compiz, crashed to the white screen, went back to a command line and did a "killall compiz" to get me back to a normally functioning X.

Out of curiosity, I've also just tried the AMD64_K from the latest daily, just for fun and to see if it works. I can't even see anything related to compiz in that build - has it been removed?

OK, check what you have got installed (open-source driver or closed source driver), what you have got declared in your xorg.conf file, and make sure you are not loading both drivers. Also install the latest version of the 64-bit closed-source driver, as explained above.

Compiz is not bundled with the SL KDE edition LiveDVD because KDE 4's window manager (KWin) has its own 3D 'eye candy' Desktop Effects (including desktop cube). However, you can install Compiz and use that instead if you want - that's what I do as I prefer Compiz to KWin's Desktop Effects.

EDIT: For information, these are the packages I installed under KDE 4.4.4 in order to get the Compiz eye candy:

Re: Installation of 64-bit 5.3 hangs on Acer Aspire 5745G

Postby NotExcessive » Wed Aug 18, 2010 16:46

OK here's what I've done: I've nuked AMD32_G from the laptop, and installed the Aug-11 DAILY for AMD64_G.

Everything else seems to work as before, with the exception of Skype, which now won't work with the inbuilt camera any more (mic input never worked anyway).

I emerged the 256.44 nvidia driver as you listed, but when I do a modprobe nvidia, I get a fatal error that the module doesn't exist, therefore I can't add "nvidia" to the xorg.conf file.

How do I instantiate the new nvidia module?

First of all, let's see what you have actually got installed on your laptop. If it's not already installed, install the utility eix:

Code: Select all
$ su
Password:
# equo install eix
# eix-update

Then use eix to see exactly what you have got installed and post the output:

Code: Select all
# eix -I nvidia-drivers
# eix -I xf86-video-nv
# eix -I xf86-video-nouveau

My guess is that nvidia-drivers-256.44 is masked (have a look in /etc/portage/package.mask) and is not actually installed.

What OpenGL module do you currently have installed? Please post the output of:

Code: Select all
# eselect opengl list

Also, what version of the kernel do you now have installed? Please post the output of:

Code: Select all
# uname -a
# eselect kernel list
