Recover KJots from GUI-less Comp [Solved]

Postby nightliz » Tue May 04, 2010 22:49

Hi.

After an update, I have no GUI, and I am apparently too n00b to fix it.

I need my kJots notes that are saved to the computer. Finals are next week and I need to study. Yes, I was stupid and didn't have the notes backed up elsewhere.

I have another computer that is currently running Ubuntu, and it has kJots on it.

Any suggestions on how to get the kJots pages off the misbehaving computer and onto the good one?

Try the following on the PC with the text-only interface if it has a USB socket:

1. Log-in as root user
2. Insert pen drive into GUI-less PC
3. Enter the commands:
Code: Select all
mkdir /mnt/pen
mount /dev/sd<x><n> /mnt/pen
cp /home/nightliz/.kde4/share/apps/kjots/* /mnt/pen/
umount /mnt/pen

where <x> is a letter -- probably "b" if your HDD is /dev/sda -- and <n> is a number -- probably "1" -- which you can find by using the command ls /dev/sd* | more
4. Insert pen drive into PC with GUI
5. As root user, copy KJots data files from pen drive to appropriate directory for KJots
6. Change owner of KJots data files to nightliz

Hooray! It worked! I and my GPA thank you. :D

Thank you so much for the clear and helpful directions, Fitzcarraldo! I may not switch back to Ubuntu after all.
