xdg-open (gnome-open) wouldn't open a PDF file

I installed sabayon 5/gnome (x86-64) from the livecd. Here's my problem: from firefox, PDF files are to be opened by xdg-open, whcih in turn is a bash script which will call gnome-open. But gnome-open somehow would not care about opening my PDF file. It quit with exit code 0, with nothing to show. What could be wrong here? I have evince and xpdf installed. where are the settings of gnome-open ?

gnome-open will honor your default gnome file associations. For more information about where those actually are, see these links:
