How to play DVD films with sound?

Postby chdslv » Wed Jan 13, 2010 7:13

I can see the DVD film Totem, but no sound is coming. How to get the sound?
Mp3s play well in Audacious2.
Is there any other video player for Sabayon 5.1?

Thanks!

Some more info may help us help you
Is your computer a desktop, laptop/notebook or a netbook
Are you using kde or gnome
Do you know what sound card you have
Do you have HDMI sound (from graphics card)

Do you have sound working at all (like the log-in or log-out sounds)
Have you read other sound problem threads

XBMC Media Center works well for me as does VLC media player
But with my notebook I had to get sound card working correctly as I only had sound coming from headphone jack
Desktop ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus, AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 5200, 4 Gb RAM, GeForce 9500 1GB
Notebook HP CQ61-311AX, AMD CPU M320, 4 Gb RAM, Radeon HD 4300 512 MB
Wireless AR9285, Audio ATI SBx00 (IDT 92hd75B2x5)
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once!

I prefer smplayer as a video player. You could also take a look in sulfur at the packages in media-video/ category.

Its a notebook, HP probook 4710s
Sabayon 5.1 is Gnome. Sabayon immediately found the sound card, video card etc.
Sound works in all other ways, only Totem doesn't give any sound, so I tried VLC, that too doesn't give any sound for the DVD.
XBMC doesn't even see the DVD rom, but it plays Mp3 from within the computer.
How do I show XBMC the DVD rom?

In my probook, sound comes from headphone jack and also from normal internal speakers. Output is set at dmix0. Tried HDMI, no sound comes out.

How does one use XBMC to see the dvd rom?

Thanks!

I found that very annoying when I first did a clean install of SL 5.1 but after updating system with sulfur, XBMC was updated to media-tv:xbmc-9.11~1.tbz2 the DVD is know seen

The new XBMC layout was was bit freaky at first for me and some of the settings are under different options, it was just a matter of looking at all the features until I found what I needed, for the notebook speakers to work in XBMC, I had to select System-System-Audio Output-Audio output device-Internal Audio Analog Stereo because the default setting uses my HDMI that works well when I plug it into our plasma TV

XBMC does see the home folder, but if you keep your media files on another partition or drive then you must mount that drive or partition before you add that source in XBMC (and umount that drive or partition before you shutdown)

I found with my desktop system (has the testing repository) that the new XBMC layout was not applied nor was the DVD seen, I uninstalled XBMC deleted the hidden folder /home/username/.xbmc and then reinstalled media-tv:xbmc-9.11 and app-misc:sabayon-mce-1.0-r6 it now works the same as on my notebook

Don't know why Totem and VLC do not have audio working (couldn't get sound to work with VLC on my notebook)

Thanks!

How do I uninstall XBMC, and then reinstall it? I found the .xbmc hidden file so I can delete it.

How do I install, media-tv:xbmc-9.11 and app-misc:sabayon-mce-1.0-r6?

Sorry for being such a newbie. I came from the MS Windows world.

Regards!

use the package manager http://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title=Entropy

example of installing and removing a package

Code: Select all
equo install foo

Code: Select all
equo remove foo

but you will want to make sure you have latest repo stuff so always first

Code: Select all
equo update

Thank you! I got XBMC uninstalled and reinstalled. Sound started working too.
XBMC sees external usb devices, such as external hard disk, but it still doesn't see the DVD rom, even though, I have clicked on the play DVDs automatically. Now, I don't want to change anything, if only sound comes on a DVD, it'll be absolutely nice!
VLC player started giving sound, so I'm delighted. Only wish is that XBMC would do the same thing too...

Thanks!

A new problem had occurred.
In the Music section, there are no controls of any kind, to stop or wahtever.
Still the DVD rom is not seen at all by XBMC.

VLC Player does everything quite well, but a XBMC is lot of eye-candy, one would like tpo use it.

How can I get into the internet while using XBMC. i,e.,
1) minimize XBMC,
2) through XBMC

Thanks

Does your XBMC look like this
http://xbmc.org/skins/confluence/
or like this
http://xbmc.org/skins/pm3-hd/

If it looks like pm3-hd
Then delete the hidden folder /home/your-user-name/.xbmc

And using sulfur remove media-tv xbmc-9.11
Close all open windows and reboot computer

Once computer has started, using sulfur install
media-tv xbmc-9.11~1
app-misc sabayon-mce-1.0-r6
