Sabayon 5.1r1 - cannot find VLC

Post by manilaph » Sun Jan 03, 2010 11:22

Hi to all!

I just installed Sabayon 5.1r1 successfully. I also had to install the Ralink RT73 drivers to get my wireless working.

Anyway, I cannot find the VLC (media player) which I usually use when I watch movies. I remember that I installed VLC using Portage but I cannot find VLC in the menu under "Applications > Sound & Video".

Where could it have gone to?

Thank you.

Hi, welcome to the Sabayon Forums! :mrgreen:

Even if an application is installed it could not appear under the main menu, you could add an entry yourself, the detailed procedure depends on your desktop environment.
In KDE4 you should open "Edit Menu" and add an entry, in Gnome my advice is to install alacarte and add a menu entry.
Sorry if I don't go deep in the description, but I don't use those desktop environments :lol:

You could also run VLC using a console, entering:

Code: Select all

vlc
Another way to add the application to the menu is adding a desktop file in the /usr/share/applications directory.
If you open that directory you will see many desktop files, their syntax is very simple and they are no more than simple text files; if a vlc.desktop file does not exist, you could add it.
It should be something like this:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=VLC
GenericName=Media Player
Comment=Play your media
Exec=vlc
Icon=vlc
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=AudioVideo;

Hi,

Thank you very much for the speedy and very informative response.

I will try these out. I use the Gnome 2.28 environment since in my experience, it works better with wireless stuff (I dont know why).

Sabayon is great!
