5.1 livedvd great = installed not!!

Post by smokin1974 » Fri Dec 18, 2009 13:11

got the 5.1g dvd running fine in live mode - detects wifi, nvidia card etc etc - decided to install and all appears to go smoothly but im gettin what i think is an x error at the end as it wont go to a graphical login - startx says already running, gnome-session gives 'display error' iirc. tried copying the xorg.conf file (from the nvidia utilities program) to the installed version still no joy

any ideas where im going wrong?

thanks

Chris

try pressing alt+ctrl+f7 ?

I think you get thrown into tty1 because something is not loading.

Yup - thanks!! that did it!!! - any ideas why it went to tty1 though???

next question - how do i get my sb audigy1 (with breakout panel on front of pc) to work - had issues trying it with a MEPIS kde 4.2 as well - weird thing there was it worked through the dedicated headphone socket on the front just fine (all mixer channels etc) but wouldnt output to line out 1 or 2 to feed my audio amp

Here im afraid i get nothing at all?

suggestions as to where to start - not exactly new to linus as been using mepis 24/7 for years - trouble is when its right you tend to leave things and forget how to 'tweak' - gnome is a little alien too still so any help appreciated

thanks again

Chris

have you a login session, without X?
if yes, try in this Bash

Code: Select all

login: root
then enter your root password
the try each by each, the following commands... one of the will be appear some graphical en....:

startx if not works, try the following....
CRTL_ALT_F7 OR
gdm OR
kdm OR
xdm
if neither works...
try:

Code: Select all

cd /
cd /etc/init.d
xdm stop
xdm start
if you continue without X (do you have net working?) in the bash, log as root and made:

equo update
equo install linux-sabayon
equo install nvidia (or ati)-drivers
eselect opengl set nvidia (or ati)

seems to me to be the nvidia drivers...

@albfneto Its nice you try to help but let me explain:

The initial problem has to do with XDM being in boot runlevel, what happens is

-> NFS kicks in and notices there is No connection
-> Meanwhile xdm is allready loading in the same runlevel
-> NFS reports it cannot start so it wants to go into tty1 to report about the problem.

There are several ways to fix this.

If you do not use NFS at all, remove it from the boot runlevel

Code: Select all

rc-update del nfsmount
If you use NFS and want it all to work with NetworkManager at boot time a workaround can be found here:
http://joostruis.blogspot.com/2008/08/w ... de-41.html (depending on your system speed you can also try to set the sleep to 20 or something)

I also advice to check out rc-update (as root) if you see xdm in the boot run level we want to change that:

Code: Select all

rc-update del xdm boot && rc-update add xdm

thanks- i think i get whats happening. i did enable nfs as an install option. not using it currently but would like to so will try the workaround first when i get home

Have you any ideas on the sound issue? As I understand pulseaudio isnt too keen on my card would like to get it going though. doesnt even list it in pulseaudio although it does get a mention at boot up (EMU10K1)

Any help appreciated

cheers. Chris

opted to disable nfs for the meantime to get graphical login. as for soundcard it appears alsa is/was seeing my usb midi keyboard as default sound device. unplugged for now and ran alsaconf and alsamixer. the system now sees the card but i am in the same situation as mepis 8.5 with kde 4.3 in that all appears to work and you hear sound from headphone socket but not line out. further investigation required. have read about the card defaulting to digital out with pulseaudio but cant check just now.

thanks again

Even though I knew what the problem was with NFS, I never got why it went in tty1 and where to change this. turns out its located here:

/etc/conf.d/splash
and notice this one:

Code: Select all

SPLASH_VERBOSE_ON_ERRORS="no"
So now its set to no it will not drop to tty1 on such an error.

http://gitweb.sabayonlinux.org/?p=overl ... 8cfdd7a06a

So now we fully triangled that problem. :D
