atthe level of my knownledge, in linux, the gnome and any other packages or systems, cannot are in a single directory, as in win...
the binaries are in /bin, the configs in /etc , your user configs in /home hidden, variables in /var, libraries in/lib etc...
but sulfur locate the unecessary packages and remove the, the packages of gnome that remain in the hdd are the dependencies...
when you install XFCE, close gnome, open a session in xfce,
if yorking, you may open sulfur, under XFCE use the keyword "gnome" in the "installed" session of sulfur, the mark all these gnome packs and remove then...i have in mind that if they xfce dependencies, they cannot be removed...
but if you use some GNOME application under XFCE it will also removed..., for ex, in xfce the cd burner is xfburn, but if you use brasero, following the above procedure will remove brasero also...!
i enjoy xfce . in fact i use all the graphical env.
