This is a shot in the dark but you could try, as root,
Code: Select all
equo install gdm
and see if a re-installation of gdm fixes the problem.

Not sure about the other posters who had this problem, but I can't boot into any grafix mode. And haven't a clue how to start my 3g modem in text mode. :(
In order to re install the gdm I would have to have internet connection. Any way to do this off of the live DVD, yet have it re install the gdm on the installed HD?

lazevedo wrote:allright, your output of

Code: Select all
eselect opengl list

should be

Code: Select all
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   ati
  [2]   nvidia *
  [3]   xorg-x11

if not, you should

Code: Select all
eselect openg set 2

so your problem would be solved, I think.

Everything was as it should there. displaymanager was gdm, so nothing wrong there.
Well, my sabayon is a very fresh install, so maybe it's most easy to just re-install sabayon?

It may be easy to reinstall but if when you try to install some other program or update you system the same thing happens. Then what.

I've installed three times now with the same results every time.
As soon as I try to install any other program it wants to up date the system and everything goes down hill from there.
That's where the problem is.

As thevOOdOO said earlier, we need logs. All the obvious "cures" have been tried and the logs will help find out what has happened. dmesg is important and also Xorg.0.log, xdm.log, equo.log (You can find logs at /var/log and var/log/entropy). Also post the output of lspci and lsusb.
There's probably more but that's all I can think of for the moment.

Code: Select all
equo install kdm && rc-update add consolekit default

and

Code: Select all
eselect opengl set <coresponding number here>

fixed mine. update tried to install gdm, but i needed kdm, and the opengl was set to nvidia (i needed X11)... sabayon forums ftw. that should help anyone using kde. for the gnome people, i dont know, seeming as i've never used it :|

check whether that library exists:

Code: Select all
ls -g /usr/lib64/libXext*

i probably would reinstall the package that files belongs to:

Code: Select all
equo install x11-libs/libXext
