Resolution Problem

Postby AxlD » Sun Nov 01, 2009 19:44

Hello to the coolest distro ever!

My problem is the following:

My monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster P2370 which has 23" wide screen. Unfortunately the max resolution I can have via Preferences->Display or via Catalyst Control Center is the streched 1600x1200. My Graphic Card is ATI 4890.

I try to change xorg.conf but nothing happens. To be more detailed, my default xorg.conf is:

Code: Select all
Section "Module"
    SubSection  "extmod"
       Option    "omit xfree86-dga"
    EndSubSection
    Load    "i2c"
    Load    "ddc"
    Load    "vbe"
    Load    "dri"
    Load    "glx"
    Load    "synaptics"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
     Option    "AllowMouseOpenFail"    "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier    "Generic Monitor"
    VertRefresh    43 - 60
    HorizSync      28 - 80
EndSection

Section "Device"

    Identifier  "SabayonVga0"
    Driver      "fglrx"
    #BusID    "PCI:04:00"
    #Option "RenderAccel" "on"
    #Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
    #Option "BusType" "PCI"
    #Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    #Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
    Option "UseEvents" "True"
    Option "LogoPath" "/usr/share/backgrounds/sabayonlinux-nvidia.png"

EndSection

Section "Screen"

    Identifier    "Screen 0"
    Device        "SabayonVga0"
    Monitor       "Generic Monitor"
    #Option       "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"

    DefaultDepth 24

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth      8
        ViewPort   0 0
        #Modes      "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth           16
        ViewPort        0 0
        #Modes      "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth           24
        ViewPort        0 0
        #Modes      "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier   "Main Layout"
    Screen 0    "Screen 0"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
   #Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

I've done some changes (after consulting the Sabayon Wiki here -> http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... _xorg.conf ) and now the screen section of my xorg.conf is:

Code: Select all
Section "Screen"

    #Option       "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
   Identifier "Screen 0"
   Device     "SabayonVga0"
   Monitor    "Generic Monitor"
   DefaultDepth     24
   SubSection "Display"

           #Modes      "1920x1080" "1680x1050" "1440x900" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
      Viewport   0 0
      Depth     8
   EndSubSection
   SubSection "Display"

           #Modes      "1920x1080" "1680x1050" "1440x900" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
      Viewport   0 0
      Depth     16
   EndSubSection
   SubSection "Display"

      #Modes      "1920x1080" "1680x1050" "1440x900" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
      Viewport   0 0
      Depth     24
   EndSubSection
EndSection

After that I used the command
Code: Select all
/opt/bin/aticonfig --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --tls=1

as instructed to force the GPU read xorg.conf.
Still nothing happens. What must I do to force my monitor display in 1920x1080?

Thank you in advance and excuse my english! :)

You mean I have to erase the (#) in front of the modes?

Yes, that's what he meant

The lines starting with # are ignored so that makes it possible to have notes, altenative values for reference, or comments (hence the line is "commented") whithin the config files

MadOp again, excuse my newbieness... There are (#) not only before the screen modes but there are other options who have the (#) before them too. I've tried at first remove the (#) before the modes, so xorg.conf was like this:

Code: Select all
Section "Module"
    SubSection  "extmod"
       Option    "omit xfree86-dga"
    EndSubSection
    Load    "i2c"
    Load    "ddc"
    Load    "vbe"
    Load    "dri"
    Load    "glx"
    Load    "synaptics"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
     Option    "AllowMouseOpenFail"    "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier    "Generic Monitor"
    VertRefresh    43 - 60
    HorizSync      28 - 80
EndSection

Section "Device"

    Identifier  "SabayonVga0"
    Driver      "fglrx"
    #BusID    "PCI:04:00"
    #Option "RenderAccel" "on"
    #Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
    #Option "BusType" "PCI"
    #Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    #Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
    Option "UseEvents" "True"
    Option "LogoPath" "/usr/share/backgrounds/sabayonlinux-nvidia.png"

EndSection

Section "Screen"

    Identifier    "Screen 0"
    Device        "SabayonVga0"
    Monitor       "Generic Monitor"
    #Option       "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"

    DefaultDepth 24

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth      8
        ViewPort   0 0
        Modes      "1920x1080" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth           16
        ViewPort        0 0
        Modes      "1920x1080" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth           24
        ViewPort        0 0
        Modes      "1920x1080" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier   "Main Layout"
    Screen 0    "Screen 0"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
   #Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

No progress. Then I tried to remove the (#) from all the options in xorg.conf so now it's like this:

Code: Select all
Section "Module"
    SubSection  "extmod"
       Option    "omit xfree86-dga"
    EndSubSection
    Load    "i2c"
    Load    "ddc"
    Load    "vbe"
    Load    "dri"
    Load    "glx"
    Load    "synaptics"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
     Option    "AllowMouseOpenFail"    "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier    "Generic Monitor"
    VertRefresh    43 - 60
    HorizSync      28 - 80
EndSection

Section "Device"

    Identifier  "SabayonVga0"
    Driver      "fglrx"
    BusID    "PCI:04:00"
    Option "RenderAccel" "on"
    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
    Option "BusType" "PCI"
    Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
    Option "UseEvents" "True"
    Option "LogoPath" "/usr/share/backgrounds/sabayonlinux-nvidia.png"

EndSection

Section "Screen"

    Identifier    "Screen 0"
    Device        "SabayonVga0"
    Monitor       "Generic Monitor"
    Option       "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"

    DefaultDepth 24

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth      8
        ViewPort   0 0
        Modes      "1920x1080" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

    EndSubsection

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth           16
        ViewPort        0 0
        Modes      "1920x1080" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

    EndSubsection

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth           24
        ViewPort        0 0
        Modes      "1920x1080" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

    EndSubsection

EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier   "Main Layout"
    Screen 0    "Screen 0"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
   Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Again nothing.

What am I missing? What I must note is that generaly the resolutions of xorg.conf do not appear in System->Preferences->Display nor in Catalyst. So I guess that in the end the system does no read xorg.conf.

Again, thank you in advance...

you don't want to remove all the #s in you xorg, just the ones you need.

Sure but just as I said removing the (#) before the screen modes didn't do the trick....

Also ensure that you are running amdcccle as root (i.e. in konsole, $sudo amdcccle). If you just click on the icon, it is run as user. It should give you a warning, but basically, no changes you make will stick. Kind of defeats the purpose of having an icon, but hey...

you better go into run level 3 via 'init 3', and then X -configure; mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then change the xorg.conf from /etc/X11/ like here:
Code: Select all
Section "Screen"
    Identifier     "Screen0"
    Device         "Card0"
    Monitor        "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth       24
    SubSection     "Display"
        Viewport    0 0
        Depth       24
        Modes      "1920x1080"
    EndSubSection
EndSection
