usb problems [Solved]

//sorted

new to linux.

recently installed sabayon 5.0 - which i'm hugely impressed with!
sabayon is fully updated with only a couple of addon packages, e.g. gkrellm
i am trying to copy large amounts of data to new drives (the old drives are now in pata & sata usb enclosures) after a bad experience with windows.

first of all, all the copies where taking forever. i was sure "something" was wrong but i didn't (still don't!) know enuf about Linux to tell. i was also having lots of problems with permissions (i will post again about this issue). suffice to say, i ended up simply copying the files into ntfs partitions. the usb drives, sata & pata, also kept dropping out, i.e. they disappeared from the "devices recently plugged in" list & vanished from appearing in file manager.
when i looked in info centre, only some of the usb ports were shown as usb 2. others all usb 1.
my mobo has 4 (i think) usb ports on the rear plus two in the front case. i also added a usb 2 controller card (in a pci slot) when i built the machine. then things got worse, other usb devices were not even detected.

i have tried plugging the usb hd in a powered usb hub (that's the main one i use) which is plugged into the rear panel; i've tried with the usb hub plugged into the usb pci controller card; i've tried with the drive plugged directly into the rear panel and into the usb card; i've also tried plugging it in the front usb, i.e. every combination (however not every possible port on every devices).

now it's gone worse, most of yesterday other usb devices (even a pen drive) were not recognised. then i plugged my mp3 player into the usb hub to charge it and it was recognised!

mobo is:
GByte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H MoBo

i really do seem to be in that well known creek without any of the appropriate implements to make my canoe move.
plus, i really can't live without my usb ports, pen drive & camera addict, please help urgently.

anything else you need to help me, please holler.

Which sabayon linux, 5.0 has several versions ?

check dmesg and messages log files for errors. You can find out how to do that with viewtopic.php?f=86&t=15530

you could also open a terminal and su to root and type

Code: Select all
tail -f /var/log/messages

than plug in one of your devices and see if it spits out any hints.

Code: Select all
lspci

will also give you your hardware details

You also made sure that the md5sum was good of your iso before installing?

wow! thanks for the rapid and very complete reply.

i haven't time to do all the things with the log files atm. hope to get around to that prob this evening, otherwise tomorrow.
please see the attached screen shot.
during the period shown i plugged a pen drive into a front panel usb port (left for over two minutes)
then directly into rear mobo (left for over two minutes)
then i powered up (it was already connected to my mini usb hub) a usb sata hd enslosure (about 30 seconds later)
then i plugged a pen drive into my mini usb hub (left for over two minutes)
after unplugging pen drive and powering off the usb sata drive i waited over five minutes before taking screen snapshot.

question: what does the "lspci" do? anything to do with "ls"

in the mean time, here's the other info you asked for, in case this sheds any further light into my small dark corner.

software
Sabayon 5.0 amd-64 K

hardware
1x AMD PHENOM2 X4 945 sAM3 *95W*
1x GByte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H MoBo
1x Corsair TwinX 4GB DDR3 1333
2x 1.5TB Ssung HD154UI SATA HDD
1x SSUNG TS-H653N/HPDH oem 20X
1x XCLIO 3060PLUS CASE NO PSU
1x 500W STORM PSU ATX
+
1x dvd/cd combo - from old machine

yes, i did check the md5. in fact, that's yet another of the wow things about Linux, i.e. that the cd/dvd burn process actually calculates the md5. unlike certain other os's where you need to find a version that some kind person has written and is willing to maintain.

any further thoughts after seeing the other stuf?f you asked for?
hardware ...
plugging stuff in while running the terminal ...?
or why the lspci thing didn't display anything ... that's presuming that it should?

the output displayed by these utils is ... well, certainly beyond me.
i can see that it mentions usb 1. i can see some, what look like they might be, errors. but it looks as if it probably sorted things out later. me thinks it needs a more expert eye than mine.

would it be appropriate for me to post the output from this util here for someone to look at?
if so, i've not a clue how to copy all that data here - anything more than a screen grab and i'm lost.

hi curse.
"on board", far more than that m8. my current thinking is that i could have a really long term relationship with sabayon, it's certainly easier to work with than any women i've ever meet. who knows, maybe we'll even go so as far as a civil partnership (same as a marriage but when the partners are not just male & female).

i did the dmesg thing this morning but got lost around line two million.
i do it again and then post the last 20 lines or so. will a screen grab be enough otherwise how do i "paste" the lines here plez?

ok, dmesg done.
the first screenshot was taken before, hence the label "before".
then i plugged a pen drive into my powered 7 port usb hub.
after about 2 minutes ...
i switched on the power to the sata usb hard drive (it was already connected to the same powered 7 port hub).
i waited a good 2 or 3 minutes before taking the second screen shot, labelled "after".

N.B.
at no point was the normal "look what i've found" message displayed
