Kde 4.3.1 comes with its own acceleration manger so they did not include compiz with SL 5
I like to have the candy that kwin doesn't have

If you use Sulfur you can install compiz-fusion which will install everything except fusion-icon

Compiz did not work on any of my systems that had my ATI X1650 AGP Graphics card

Note
You do not have to install accel-manager

With my notebook can only get compiz to work correctly if I add Compiz Fusion Icon to System Settings Advanced tab Autostart

With my Desktop compiz works if I select compiz in System Settings Default Applications Window Manager Use a different window manager

I also have disabled desktop effects in System Settings Desktop Desktop Effects
Desktop ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus, AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 5200, 4 Gb RAM, GeForce 9500 1GB
Notebook HP CQ61-311AX, AMD CPU M320, 4 Gb RAM, Radeon HD 4300 512 MB
Wireless AR9285, Audio ATI SBx00 (IDT 92hd75B2x5)
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once!

I now have this card working under kde, but only if I add Compiz Fusion Icon to System Settings Advanced tab Autostart and deselect Loose binding from the context menu of the Compiz Fusion Icon on System tray

Hi joeoden,

I haven't used Compiz for several months (it used to work OK with my ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 under SL 4.2 and the open-source Radeon driver -- see Re: ATI drivers < 9.6 for 2.6.29). I installed SL 5.0 KDE x86_64 when it was released and Entropy world-updated it (and have kept it up to date since then via Portage), and I decided to have a play with Compiz again.

However I cannot get Compiz working, even if I try the various fixes you and others have posted, so I wondered whether you are using earlier versions of xorg and/or the compiz packages? Below is a list of the latest versions of the pertinent packages that I have installed. Do you have the same versions of these installed?

dev-python/compizconfig-python-0.8.4
x11-libs/compiz-bcop-0.8.4
x11-libs/compizconfig-backend-gconf-0.84
x11-libs/compizconfig-backend-kconfig-0.8.4-r1
x11-libs/libcompizconfig-0.8.4
x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-extra-0.8.4-r1
x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-main-0.8.4
x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-unsupported-0.8.4
x11-wm/compiz-0.8.4
x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.8.4
x11-apps/ccsm-0.8.4
x11-apps/fusion-icon-0.1-r1
x11-wm/emerald-0.8.4
x11-themes/emerald-themes-0.5.2

x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.1
media-libs/mesa-7.5.2
x11-apps/mesa-progs-7.5.1
x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.7
x11-base/xorg-x11-7.4-r1
x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.12.4 (the open-source Radeon driver)

I get the following message if I launch fusion-icon from a Konsole window:

Code: Select all
$ fusion-icon
 * Detected Session: kde
 * Searching for installed applications...
 * No GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap with direct rendering context
 ... present with indirect rendering, exporting: LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
 * Using the GTK Interface
 * Starting Compiz
 ... executing: compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp --indirect-rendering
WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXCreatePixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported!  This is an application bug!
WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXDestroyPixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported!  This is an application bug!

Do you also get this message? I've googled it and, if I understand the discussions correctly, Compiz should still work even with this message. But this is not my case. As I think you mentioned in one of your posts, for me the display reverts to the KWin desktop but without window title bars.

Hi Fitzcarraldo
Try downgrading to
x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.5
x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.6

There is a problem with the ati and nvidia drivers using
x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.1
x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.7

The X1650 card I'm using is in the wife's x86 computer using
x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.5
x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.6

With the above system I did a clean install of SL 5 x86 G then installed kde-meta

My notebook with a Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics has no problems with compiz using
x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.1
x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.7
from the limbo repository

Main system with nvidia graphics, I had to disable the limbo repository to get compiz and/or kwin working
Note when I disabled limbo repository kde was also downgraded to 4.3.2, can't remember how I fooled system to install kde 4.3.3 (think I restored image before x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.1 and x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.7 was installed)

System with nvidia graphics and using the limbo repository, compiz and/or kwin are not working (slow and stalling)

If you have no luck
Suggest to do clean install of SL 5 Gnome (if compiz is working on live dvd) then install kde-meta
Please note so far with SL5
I have not used Portage, have only used sulfur and/or the equo command

Hope this info helps
Joe

Thanks for the rapid (and detailed) reply, Joe. When you say that there is a problem with the ati and nvidia drivers using x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.1 and x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.7, do you know what it is? I'll be googling it as well, of course. I've read of problems with the closed-source fglrx driver (ati-drivers) and xorg-server 1.7.1, but not yet with the open-source Radeon driver (xf86-video-ati). The reason I ask is because I upgraded to xorg-server-1.7.1 due to display problems. For example, closing an overlapping window often left a hole in the window underneath; the pop-up description when hovering the mouse pointer over a Panel icon would appear at the top of the screen or cut a piece out of a window somewhere on the screen. Upgrading to the latest xorg-server and Radeon driver has fixed the problem (well, it now happens once in a blue moon).

I'm sorry I don't know what the actual problem is, the info I have is second hand, something to do with the drivers and lack of support for closed source, lets hope it won't be to long before a fix is created which is way over my head

OK, thanks, Joe. After doing a bit of research I think I'll hold fire on downgrading xorg-server and the X.Org drivers from X11R7.5 to the 1.6 series, as it is more complicated than it first seems (e.g. see Comment #12 to Gentoo Bugzilla Bug Report No. 291312) and I don't want to risk borking my installation. I would go ahead and add that mask list to /etc/portage/package.mask and merge xorg-server-1.6.5, xorg-drivers-1.6 etc. (I've done similar in the past) if I didn't use this laptop for work, so I'll wait for the X.Org people to issue an upgrade to xorg-server and xf86-video-ati (or for the Compiz people to issue an upgrade to Compiz so that it works with the current release of X.Org). Version 1.7.2 of xorg-server is scheduled to be released today, 26 November, and I'll upgrade to that, as soon as it becomes available via Portage, to see if it fixes the problem. Thanks again for the info on which X.Org packages work with Compiz 0.8.4.

I just tried this
viewtopic.php?f=56&t=19117#p108987
has stopped the stalling and jerking using compiz with the 190.42 nvidia drivers and x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.1 x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.7

Have also noticed that the 190.42 nvidia drivers have been masked in sulfur

Don't know if changing to useEvents="False" in xorg.conf for ati cards will work or not
(will try when I wake up in the morning)

I've tried it with my ATI Mobity Radeon X1600, Joe, and it does not help. X still crashes and sends me back to the SL log-in screen if I launch Compiz. Furthermore, I'm running xorg-server-1.7.2 now, but it didn't make any difference.

EDIT (1 Dec, 2009 10:31): By the way, xorg-server-1.7.2 is hard masked in Portage still. I downloaded the 1.7.2 ebuild from the Gentoo Packages Web site, put it in the relevant directory, generated the manifest and merged it:
