I tried to upgrade SL 5 yesterday and now I'm downloading SL 4.2 Core to reinstall it. It was a completely disaster.. :D
I know it's an experimental branch but I took a chance.. :)
However, I can reformat entire hdd which I was lazy to do it earlier because Ubuntu doesn't work and I'd like to replace it by PCLOS 2009.2, Debian, openSUSE 11 or Mandriva2009 as a secondary distro.. :)

When the experienced ones say, "not advised", it means that "don't do" gently. So, if you are a newbie like me, don't do. :D
Everything is your fault. Yes, I advised you but you did.

Well the RC2 is out to testers and will become the final version if no major issues found.

It should be safe to hop to 5. I know it's not going to be easy for those not as experienced tho, we are hoping to improve this in the future.

A wiki howto:
http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... g_Branches
and make sure to look at viewtopic.php?f=86&t=16399 for examples

The biggest issue I see is people with their video, Your Kernel and Driver have to match and be set, check eselect opengl list and make sure it's set.

I usually don't do it but I was impatient. I have no experience with updating via the package manager, I usually install a fresh new system because there problems with updating even when a distro is stable because of depencies etc..
However, branch 5 has been released so I hope my problem is solved, I'm downloading it at the moment and syncing Portage for 6 or 7 hours in SL 4.2 which I installed 2 days ago.. :)

I've installed SL5 today and I think it's not bad. At the beginning there are some minor issues but I can manage it... :)
I've found out that Firefox 3.5.3 can't install any add-ons. Installation is fine until "restart Firefox". Click on it and Firefox just shut down and doesn't start again. I have to start it manually but there are no any installed add-ons..
