New installation in virtualbox

Post by jacdc » Thu Feb 14, 2019 22:51

Good morning¡
I'll try to write in english, I'm nnot very good but I hope someone can understand. Yesterday I installed sabayon xfce in virtualbox. Some years ago I used it for some months but I really am very newby as I can't solve many problems.
The virtual machine is very small, a square that I can't drag to make bigger. I thought that may be the guest additions might solve it. But when I tried to update after many minutes it fails with a message: Source Package Manager is too old, please update it: UnsupportedAPIException()
☢ ## An error occurred. Action aborted.
I searched online and tried to follow the suggested commands but nothing helped.
Thanks a lot
Buenas tardes. Después de un par de años intento nuevamente conocer algo más de sabayon. Hoy instalé Xfce y al tratar de instalar guest additions y actualizar me da un error que no puedo resolver.
Source Package Manager is too old, please update it: UnsupportedAPIException()
☢ ## An error occurred. Action aborted.
Muchas gracias por cualquier ayuda que me puedan dar.

Thank you. I started again, this time I downloaded gnome, I didn't check but I think it isn't daily. I am updating now, it hasn't stopped yet with the same error. I'll wait to see how it finishes and if necessary I'll get a daily iso.

I waited for the update to finish and it failed again with the same error.
I downloaded a daily xfce iso but it doesn't load in virtualbox. There's a black terminal and a message, not literal as I can't copy paste it:
dracut: FATAL: Don't know how to handle 'root=live:UUID....
dracut: refusing to continue
dracut warning Signal caught

I am downloading another daily, this time gnome from the link you provided. I hope the third will be ok.

I know we had this issue some time ago on daily images but it is resolved now. Are you sure you've downloaded the most recent daily image (dated 14-2-2019)?

I actually tested latest images in both baremetal and virtualbox today and they are fine.

Hi¡ The new daily from the link http://na.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/sabayo ... iso/daily/
was ok, the one that failed was xfce from download in sabayon webpage.
Now it's updated but I can't use the whole screen, it's just a small square in virtualbox. Could you help me solve this?

Think you should install the guest-additions that matches your kernel.

Thank you, I checked that I have kernel 4.14. I looked in rigo and the guest additions for this kernel seemed installed, just in case i re installed them.
I searched online and found a wiki for gentoo https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/VirtualBox,
The first instructions I don't know if would be applicable for sabayon, nor I have any idea how to do them, do I need to do it? if so could you tell me how, please?
KERNEL Support for VirtualBox hardware
When running Gentoo as a guest system, enable the following kernel options on the guest system (either built-in or as modules) to get proper support for the hardware emulated by VirtualBox:
<*> Bus options (PCI etc.) --->
[*] Mark VGA/VBE/EFI FB as generic system framebuffer
<*> Device Drivers --->
<*> Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers (libata) --->
[*] AHCI SATA support
[*] ATA SFF support (for legacy IDE and PATA)
[*] ATA BMDMA support
[*] Intel ESB, ICH, PIIX3, PIIX4 PATA/SATA support
<*> Network device support --->
<*> Ethernet driver support --->
[*] Intel devices
[*] Intel(R) PRO/1000 Gigabit Ethernet support
<*> Input device support --->
<*> Keyboards --->
[*] AT keyboard
<*> Mice --->
[*] PS/2 mouse
<*> Graphics support --->
<*> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support) --->
[*] Enable legacy fbdev support for your modesetting driver
<*> Virtio GPU driver
<*> Frame buffer Devices --->
<*> Support for frame buffer devices --->
[*] Enable Firmware EDID
[*] Simple framebuffer support
<*> Console display driver support --->
[*] Framebuffer Console support
[*] Map the console to the primary display device
<*> Sound card support --->
<*> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture --->
<*> PCI sound devices --->
[*] Intel/SiS/nVidia/AMD/ALi AC97 Controller
<*> USB support --->
[*] xHCI HCD (USB 3.0) support
[*] EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support
:
-
- then install guest additions that I did through rigo Virtualbox Guest Additions 6.0.4#4.14.0-sabayon
- then add my user to group: gpasswd -a <user> vboxusers
- then Load the required driver module into the kernel. (I did this too though I was scared it would break everything)
root #modprobe vboxdrv
root #modprobe vboxnetadp
root #modprobe vboxnetflt
root #modprobe vboxpci
I rebooted but still the screen is small and I can't resize it.
What am I missing?
Thanks a lot
