done it. mostly got replies on the like of "nothing to do" or "nothing to remove".
Kernel is now 4.14 due to the issues with 4.18 & 4.19. No wifi connection now, apart from that it seems to be working fine.

OK, from the output of the lspci command you posted, your laptop has the following Wi-Fi card:

Code: Select all

01:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 31)
From the output of the lsmod command you posted, the modules (drivers) for your Wi-Fi card look correct:

Code: Select all

[...]
ath10k_pci 49152 0
ath10k_core 278528 1 ath10k_pci
ath 32768 1 ath10k_core
mac80211 475136 1 ath10k_core
[...]
cfg80211 315392 3 ath,mac80211,ath10k_core
[...]
However, searching the Web tells me that problems with this particular model of Wi-Fi card in various models of machine are common in various Linux distributions. One example in particular caught my eye: WiFi not working on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Lenovo Legion Y520. Notice that he had to blacklist the ideapad_laptop module. Now, if you look at the output of lsmod you posted, it so happens that your machine also has that module loaded:

Code: Select all

[...]
ideapad_laptop 32768 0
[...]
So edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add the following line to it:

Code: Select all

blacklist ideapad_laptop
Then reboot and see if Wi-Fi now works.

Double-check that the module is no longer loaded:

Code: Select all

$ lsmod | grep ideapad
Also, what does the output of the rfkill command return?:

Code: Select all

$ rfkill
ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
 0 wlan phy0 unblocked unblocked
 1 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked

this is the answer to the first:

Code: Select all

ideapad_laptop 32768 0
sparse_keymap 16384 1 ideapad_laptop

do a fsck and see if that fixes the problem
Host: sabayon.local Kernel: 4.19.0-sabayon x86_64 bits: 64

receiving a warning that says that by running fsck "WILL cause SEVERE filesystem damage" is a bit worrying...
Should I go on despite this? :-(
