Libreoffice writer cannot 'Save As' other formats [Solved]

Post by rsab » Tue Dec 01, 2015 17:38

I have installed Libreoffice through Rigo and I find that its writer (document application) cannot save documents to formats other than odt. As I click "All Formats" button in 'Save As' dialog box, the list appears but I cannot choose any of them. The screen freezes, the mouse can move but cannot select anything. I have to press escape to come back (first time I thought system has crashed and I rebooted).

Is there some package that I need to install for libreoffice to save to other formats? Did you have a similar problem or is libreoffice working all right in your system? Thanks for your help.

No, should just work with LibreOffice. I encountered some issues lately as well, can only recommend you to report a bug.

As a workaround, you can try to convert the document from the command line.
Close all instances of LO first, open terminal, cd into the directory with your document and then run:

Code: Select all

$ libreoffice --headless --convert-to FORMAT YOUR_DOCUMENT
soffice as command works too. Replace FORMAT with the extension of the document you wish to get, for example docx, and YOUR_DOCUMENT, of course, with the document you wish to convert.

From LO man page:

Code: Select all

       --convert-to  output_file_extension[:output_filter_name] [--outdir out‐
       put_dir] file...
              Batch converts files. If --outdir is not specified then the
              current working directory is used as the output directory for
              the converted files. It implies --headless.

              Examples:

              --convert-to pdf *.doc

              Converts all .doc files to PDFs.

              --convert-to pdf:writer_pdf_Export --outdir /home/user *.doc

              Converts all .doc files to PDFs using the settings in the Writer
              PDF export dialog and saving them in /home/user.
If you want to use a specific filter, you can find the names in the xcu files here:http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice ... ts/filters. Open the file and check the first line of xml, like this one for AbiWord:

Code: Select all

    <node oor:name="AbiWord" oor:op="replace">
and there you have your filter name.

The commandline method works. Also, once a .doc file is made, it can be loaded, edited and saved again to doc without any problem by Libreoffice. I hope they correct this bug in their great software soon.

I have the same issue: I can't "Save As" nor export to PDF from the GUI.
The command line method works.

my LO is
Version: 5.0.2.2
Build ID: Sabayon official package
Locale: pt-BR (en_US.UTF-8)

I am in trouble because I'm on LO for years... I hope for an update soon...

What is the command line method for export to pdf? Is it same as for other formats like doc?

Do you get any error messages in a Konsole/Terminal window if you just launch LibreOffice from the command line? If you do, what are they?

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $ libreoffice
javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
Warning: failed to read path from javaldx

(soffice:2809): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

I am getting similar error message but the 'Save As' problem has disappeared. I am now able to save as doc format.

Code: Select all

$ libreoffice
javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
Warning: failed to read path from javaldx

(soffice:4108): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: The property GtkButton:use-stock is deprecated and shouldn't be used anymore. It will be removed in a future version.

I have the same problem as in the original post. I don't save in other formats, usually, so it's not a major problem for me, but surely it's a bug somewhere.

My terminal output is this:

Code: Select all

$ libreoffice
javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
Warning: failed to read path from javaldx
W: Unknown node under /registry/extlang: deprecated

(soffice:6757): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_container_foreach: assertion 'GTK_IS_CONTAINER (container)' failed
