dual boot GRUB problem

Postby duvel » Fri Jun 27, 2014 19:01

Hi Everyone,
I had Sabayon and windows7 running as dual boot, but I upgraded to windows8, and now the GRUB screen at startup only gives me windows8 to boot.
I tried to start up with Sabayon live dvd, but that didn't work, and startx gave the following error: "fatal server error: no screen found (EE)".
Can anyone help me boot Sabayon again or at least gain access to my files again? I can startup a Ubuntu live dvd if necessary...
TIA

If you can get to a root prompt from the LiveDVD, re-install GRUB 2, which was overwritten when you installed Windows 8:

Code: Select all
# grub2-install /dev/sda
# grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

(assuming your HDD is sda.)

I can't startup the Sabayon LiveDVD, it gives the following error: "fatal server error: no screen found (EE)" and "module license 'nvidia' traits launch". I tried reinstalling and installing other drivers but that didn't work.

Using the command you suggest with the Ubuntu LiveDVD didn't work. And "grub-install /dev/sda" gives me the following error: "failed to get connical path of '/cow'."

Btw, my hdd looks like this:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 2048 206847 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda2 206848 838858751 419325952 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda3 838860800 3907028991 1534084096 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 838862848 839886847 512000 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 839888896 3907028991 1533570048 8e Linux LVM

If you can type "startx", what are you typing that from? Have you tried the aforementioned grub2-install and grub2-mkconfig commands from that prompt?

Another thing you could do would be to boot the SystemRescueCd LiveCD, chroot into your installation (see the SL Wiki for how to do that), and run the grub2-install and grub2-mkconfig from that. If you're using LVM then you'll need to mount the volume first (also see the SL Wiki for how to do that).

Yet another thing you could do would be to download EasyBCD (google it) in Windows 8, install that and run it, and configure the Windows bootloader menu to boot either OS. A different way to skin the cat. BTW, you have to disable Windows 8 Fast Startup (because the latter is not really booting, it's partial hibernation).
