Issues with network/samba and netflix playback

Postby MEC-777 » Tue Jun 17, 2014 19:32

Hey all,

New to the forums and fairly new to Linux. I consider myself quite knowledgeable when it comes to hardware, but not so much in software. Wanted to learn Linux and reap the benefits. :D

Anyways, recently built a new HTPC with the following specs:

AMD Athlon 5350 quad-core APU
ASRock AM1H-ITX motherboard
Radeon ES 1x4GB 1600 ram
Silverstone ML05B
Cooler Master NA90 external 90w PSU.

Installed Sabayon no problem with the proprietary ATI drivers and all is well from that aspect. However, I'm having a few issues with getting things setup on the network side and with getting netflix to work in FF.

Firstly, when I open samba status, it show this message at the bottom "Error: unable to load smb.conf" and I can't do anything. The conf file does in fact exist, I can even open it in bash no problem. I suspect that is the route of the issue at the moment. I tried re-installing samba through rigo, and reboot the system but the same error occurs. Searches don't return with anything relevant to my situation, so I don't really know what to do next. It also cannot see my windows PC on the network either.

The other issue is with netflix. I live in Canada and on my windows PC I use Chrome with the "hola" extension as a free VPN/mask - this works perfectly - in windows. On my Linux box I have the latest version of FF, wine, and pipelight installed (it automatically installed other necessary components, patched wine and compiled itself on installation through rigo). I also have "Media-Hint" VPN and "user agent overrider" add-ons installed in FF as well. When I try to play a movie/show on netflix, it starts buffering, but when it hits 98-100% it gives me a DRM error message with a link to this page: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/1037

Now there is a new issue that just developed today where my network connection keeps disconnecting and re-establishing itself every 10 seconds or so. Not sure what's going on with that...

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have searched and tried to fix these issues as much as I can on my own, but I'm at a loss and not getting anywhere.

Thanks in advance. :)

Fixed the disconnecting issue, but still haven't found a solution for the "cannot open /etc/samba/smb.conf" problem.

Open to any suggestions...

Don't use Netflix myself. When you write "when I open samba status", what do you open it with? Netflix via Firefox? Your DE? If the latter, which DE are you using? More details needed. Please also post the output of the following command:

Code: Select all
ls -la /etc/samba/smb.conf

If you launch Firefox from the command line in a Konsole/Terminal window, paste the console output when you see the "Error: unable to load smb.conf" in Firefox (or whatever it is that is showing you that message).

Also, I note that WINE in SL is currently built with USE="-pipelight":

https://packages.sabayon.org/show/wine, ... -show-what

That means WINE in SL was not built with the Compholio patches (see A few questions about Pipelight [Solved]) which means that, amongst other things, Silverlight cannot play DRM-protected content.

Also, the pipelight ebuild in the SL Portage overlay is currently at version 0.2.3 whereas Pipelight is currently at 0.2.7.1 ( http://pipelight.net/cms/install/compile-pipelight.html ).

Well if its not going to play silverlight its kind of pointless to have it.
Sorry but this is one of the things I hoped sabayon would do for me but it doesnt seem to work so I may be reinstalling ubuntu.
Look I am not trying to sound like a troll here as I do like trying new distros to evaluate them for my needs and piplelight is sadly one of my needs.
Its kind of a deal breaker for me if it doesnt work as I dont use windows anymore nor care to use it.
sure I can VM ubuntu or something but if I a going to have to use ubuntu anyway might as well devote my machine to it.
I only wanted to use sabayon in an attempt to break free of ubuntu but this set me back to the big u once more sadly.
I will give sabayon another go so keep this account active... maybe next release this will work who knows.
sigh I hate doing this but I do need the distro to suit my needs
I dont want to have to compile anything and while the binary installer for piplelight worked it doesnt want to do its job.
I will keep posted of this topic regardless, if a fix is going to come I may come back to the distro sooner....
may still chat with the community though we will seeand I am doing this scattershot so please understand I do want to try other distros other then ubuntu.
Please understand I had great luck with many aspects of sabayon except this one and as soon as this gets fixed I will be back on the distro for sure.
It is a great distro from what I was able to see of it but this is something that I need to work if I am to use a distro more full time.
As soon as its fixed i will for sure stick around longer as i am liking what I did see in this nice distro.
Sabayon seems able to solve 99% of my needs, its only a 1% here so hope it will have pipelight fixed.

I have not tried on my machines running SL, but on my main laptop running 64-bit (~amd64) Gentoo I was able to browse some (but not all) Web sites that use Silverlight after installing Firefox 30.0 for Linux with Pipelight 0.2.6, by messing around with the User Agent string in Firefox. I don't use Netflix, so cannot say whether or not Firefox 30.0 for Linux and Pipelight 0.2.6 would enable users to use Netflix.

However, I was able to install Firefox 30.0 for Windows and Silverlight in WINE, and that enabled me to browse all the Web sites I know of that use Silverlight. I cannot find a working Silverlight test page with DRM. The DRM test on page http://web.sldrm.video.msn.com/d1/sldrm.html does not work, and Microsoft refused to fix it:

https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStu ... -test-site

However the non-DRM Silverlight tests on that page work in Firefox 30.0 for Windows in WINE, and so do the following Silverlight test pages (I clicked on 'Activate & Remember' in Firefox to stop the Firefox click-and-play prompt from appearing every time):

http://www.iis.net/media/experiencesmoothstreaming

http://www.kirupa.com/silverlight/DeepZ ... tPage.html

http://www.bubblemark.com/

http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/ (The first video does not load, but I think that might not be a Silverlight problem)

http://www.silverlightversion.com/

You will probably be able to do the same in SL if you install Firefox 30.0 for Windows as explained in the following blog post: Installing Firefox for Windows and the Silverlight plug-in in WINE.

I may try the firefox for windows workaround, it could work I just have had a better experience with the pipelight plugin due to it not using as many WINE processes.
