fear and loathing (of updates)

Post by pinkytoes » Mon May 12, 2014 18:13

so 154 updates camped out on my notification bar for a week
and the total is now up to 173 updates. why are they sitting there?
because i don't have time to discover another creative fix for my wifi
after trusting my operating system to update itself peacefully. again.

i want to let the updates go through, but i don't want to be back on here
with a fresh new rant in three days, after finally getting my internet back.
is there a way to just have sabayon without it being a constant fight?
internet is crucial and i can't have my operating system at odds with me.

who am i? what is my hardware? where is this coming from? answers here:

well if nobody has anything to say about my card being aggressively unsupported,
can anyone lend a hand with finding a replacement network card for my laptop?
i have researched enough to find out there are two sizes, but that size might not be enough.
if there is a blacklist / whitelist for network cards that work with acer v5-571p, i can't find it.

my knowledge of operating systems and linux may be limited
but i strongly suspect i can't shake off updates forever...

Have you tried installing another kernel using rigo? Just boot with the new installed kernel but do not remove the old one until you find the kernel that works for you. You can try that just to see if your network card works. I use rigo to change kernels and never had a problem with it!
Sabayon Linux MATE 64-bit
Gigabyte G41M-ES2L-->2gb ram
Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.60ghz-->E5300
WD-6400AAKS-Caviar-SE16-640gb-->XFS filesystem

@eor2004 thank you for posting something, sabayon support can be a bit of a brick wall.
i still use rigo for everything until this gets easier. the problem is broadcom, not sabayon.
this is what i had to do last time though if it doesn't work this time
i just don't have internet. period. that's a big risk to take every update...
okay what happened was... i thought my kernel updated to 3.13 but it was actualy 3.14
so using a friend's cellphone and a usb cable i got rigo to install broadcom-sta 3.14
and after reboot, my wifi and the nm-applet are working the way you would expect.
hopefully i can reuse the past 48 hours work in much less time, next time around.
the fact that rigo knows of broadcom-sta 3.14 means that somebody, somewhere
seems to care about linux users with my unfortunate choice of network card.
this is not just coming out of nowhere, i started sabayon as a noob Lucid Lynx user
and have 10 times the linux vocabulary now. this thread tells my ongoing struggles:
viewtopic.php?f=86&t=31483&start=10

i started this thread in the hope that someone would notice the damage it does
to discontinue support for hardware that comes with some 2013 acer laptops.
if it helps anyone else at all, the problem in a nutshell is that sabayon updates suddenly
stopped instantiating the kernel-version-specific file-tree-path that leads to broadcom.sta

194 updates pending and counting...
when i afford to be without internet for 48 hours
of frantic troubleshooting, i will send them through
and keep you posted how that all works out.

-commercial break-

so i held my breath and finally let rigo have his way,
even though he mentioned the 'B' word a few times.
aaaaand: nothing_broke. -at least nothing i need daily.
this isnt trust yet, rigo. but this is the right direction.
