All gone to hell since latest update

Postby Sorceror » Wed Mar 12, 2014 17:23

As of my first reboot since updating Sabayon KDE Tuesday 11th I'm suffering many issues:

No internet connection as my network manager isn't running and I can't find any way of turning it on
I can't access my hard drives, it won't even ask me for my root password
There is no shut down or restart option when trying to reboot, only Log out

I'm not an experienced terminal user so please go easy on me!

I feel your pain. Now I have no permission to mount a USB device even though the Thunar file manager displays it's name. Also, incoming email works but not outgoing. It seems there is some issue with user accounts.

@bobmc:

Did you try installing another file manager like dolphin? I remember sometime ago I was using SL Mate and caja didn't let me copy files from my external hdd to pc and viceversa and installing dolphin helped me fix the issue! :)

NM stuff: https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?titl ... upgrade.21

Missing shutdown and restart options may be just a result of something that KDE devs broke. Try to move your .kde directory, and see if it would help.
Why, and how to add "[Solved]" to your post. Please read. ← credits to Fitzcarraldo

systemd is not starting at boot.
Try to edit /etc/default/grub:
Code: Select all
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="net.ifnames=0"

Then run:
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Now You can reboot and, hopefully, everything will be fine.

Are those all terminal commands or am I opening a file and pasting those in somewhere?

Code part: open /etc/default/grub with your favourite editor and past in the relevant lines.

grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg: do it in terminal as su.

I opened the grub file with Kwrite and also tried with notepad under wine, but the system will not allow me to save the changes.

You can (and should) install 'mc' the midnight commander in a root console with:
Code: Select all
equo install mc

Then you can use it as normal user and also as root, where you have the rights to write /etc/defaults/grub.

If you want to use kwrite, then do this in a normal konsole:
Code: Select all
kdesu kwrite

Enter your root password and you'll have write permission also.
Hope to help you.

Thanks, but with no network manager as part of the problem, it's a bit hard to download and install anything at the moment.
This is starting to look like fresh install time!
