system doesn't boot after upgrade -Help!![Solved]

Postby fjkhf » Mon Sep 09, 2013 16:52

Hello ,

I installed yesterday sabayon 13.08 and I did an upgrade according to https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title=En:Entropy .

I turned off my PC and when I opened it today , it boots and then takes me to command line.

From there I don't know what to do .I tried "startx" but it gives me the logo screen for a second and goes back to command line.

I tried to load recovery mode but when I try to write (in command line) it doesn't write!

I have Nvidia card , I don't know if that is the problem.

Please help me because I am with no PC now!

Thank you!

Sounds like your nvidia drivers got messed up. Chances are, somehow you upgraded a kernel, but not the nvidia drivers. Graphic drivers are kernel specific. Kernels also aren't supposed to be upgraded via a standard 'equo conf upgrade' although it's happened on multiple occasions...

So, lets try and fix it shall we?

First, go ahead and boot normally, and then hit ctrl+alt+F2. This should take you to a terminal.

If that doesn't work, boot into Safe Mode, logging in as root. Then we'll need remount root to have write access and start up networking management:
Code: Select all
# mount -n -o remount,rw /
# /etc/init.d/NetworkManager start

At this point, you're at a working terminal with networking working. So, let's go ahead and fetch the latest from the entropy repo and have it perform some library checking.
Code: Select all
# equo update
# equo upgrade
# equo deptest
# equo libest

Now, most importantly, let's make sure you've got the right nvidia drivers installed.

You can check what kernel you are running by typing in
Code: Select all
$ uname -r

You can check what nvidia drivers you have installed by typing in
Code: Select all
$ equo search nvidia-drivers

and looking for which versions are installed.

If the kernel numbers after the nvidia-drivers don't match up, you know that's the problem. All you need to do is install the corresponding nvidia-drivers via entropy.

Hello and thanks for the help.

Unfortunately even though the NetworkManager is already running , I don't have connection.

So , I can't do the equo update etc commands you said.

The equo deptest showed me that a package was missing and it was about an xorg package. But I couldn't install it because I didn't have connection.

I must mention that the 'deptest' command and 'libtest' didn't showed any errors at all when I did the upgrade.

Now , I will try the installation again and then I will do again the update.

If I have the same problems what can I do?

Thanks!

You shouldn't need to do all that.

You should still have your old kernel installed, if my diagnosis is right. When booting up, hit the arrow keys during the grub menu, go to advanced options, and see if any other kernels are listed there. Try booting an older one.

If another kernel isn't there, then I could have been wrong about the whole thing (although an nvidia driver install still might have fixed it).

Edit: If you install and perform an upgrade, before rebooting, check to make sure you didn't install any new kernels. If you did, there is a utility called 'kernel-switcher' that is provided. You can use that to make sure you've switched to a particular kernel, graphic drivers and all.

Hello , unfortunately I did a fresh install .I didn't have any previous kernels..

Anyway , thanks for the suggestions.

But , if I encounter the same problem now (fresh install and no previous kernels) is there sth I can do?

Thanks!

Without having figured out exactly went wrong, it's impossible to tell.

After you perform your upgrade and before you reboot, make sure that there are no more upgrades that are available. Perform the deptest and the libtest. Shouldn't need to do all that, but it's easier to fix a problem before rebooting while your system is still fully functional than after it's broken.

Postby fjkhf » Wed Sep 11, 2013 11:23

Ok, I installed again .
Now , after equo deptest ,I am receiving:
These are the dependencies not found:
>> # <x11-base/xorg-server-1.13.99
>> # Needed by:
>> # x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga-1.6.2
>> @@ Installing available packages in 10 seconds ...
>> No packages found.
(1, False)

But , if I check for x11-base , I can found that x11-base/xorg-server-1.14 is already installed.

equo search x11-base
>> @@ Searching...
>> @@ Package: x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.14 branch: 5, [sabayon-weekly]
>> Available: version: 1.14 ~ tag: NoTag ~ revision: 1

>> Homepage: http://www.gentoo.org/

>> Available: version: 1.14.2 ~ tag: NoTag ~ revision: 0
>> Installed: version: 1.14.2 ~ tag: NoTag ~ revision: 0

Also , if I search for x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga-1.6.2 is already installed

Searching...
>> @@ Package: x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga-1.6.2 branch: 5, [__system__]
>> Installed: version: 1.6.2 ~ tag: NoTag ~ revision: 4

(The "eselect opengl list" shows nvidia as checked.)

What can I do ?Tell me before I make a reboot please!

Thanks!

At the end of an equo upgrade, it tells you packages that are no longer in the repository that should probably be removed from your system.

x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga-1.6.2 is one of those packages. It should be removed and then your deptest should be clean.

Code: Select all
# equo remove  x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga-1.6.2
