Uninstalling a desktop environment completely is not easy. The best plan of attack is to find some sort of library that is used as a dependency for that DE, but the problem is that if any other application uses that library, it will also be uninstalled.

Might I inquire as to why you wish to uninstall a DE? If you have enough hard drive space, there is no harm in keeping it installed and not using it.

Absolutely. I understand the desire to keep things clean and tidy, removing things you don't use, but sometimes it's just not worth the hassle.

Not that I've tried it, but I suppose you could use eix to produce a list of the packages and pass those to equo. I'm thinking about something along the following lines, although I'm not about to test it:

Code: Select all
equo install eix
eix-update
equo remove --ask `eix --only-names --installed --category kde-base`
equo remove --ask `eix --only-names --installed --category kde-misc`
equo libtest
equo deptest

You'd replace the category accordingly for other DEs.
