Install HP printer? "open hplip"? -- How? (KDE) [Solved]

Post by LichPortal » Wed May 29, 2013 9:36

OK, so I finally got around to installing my HP Laserjet 3390 printer on my Sabayon+KDE system.

On the Sabayon Wiki, i.e., https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?titl ... HP_Printer
it says:

1) Install hplip [...]
(OK - I did that with Rigo.)

2) [...] open hplip.

Hmm... but how do I "open hplip"?? It doesn't appear anywhere in the main launcher, and is not in my $PATH nor in root's $PATH. I would have expected it to appear somewhere in the "System Settings" menu(s), but I don't see it. Indeed, I don't see anything related to printer management.

TIA for any help.

You should have an entry called "HP Device Manager" in the menus.

Or simply run

Code: Select all

hp-toolbox
or

Code: Select all

hp-setup
in terminal.

There are more related commands:

Code: Select all

$ hp-
hp-align hp-levels hp-scan
hp-check hp-linefeedcal hp-sendfax
hp-clean hp-logcapture hp-setup
hp-colorcal hp-makecopies hp-systray
hp-config_usb_printer hp-makeuri hp-testpage
hp-devicesettings hp-mkuri hp-timedate
hp-diagnose_plugin hp-pkservice hp-toolbox
hp-diagnose_queues hp-plugin hp-uninstall
hp-doctor hp-pqdiag hp-unload
hp-fab hp-print hp-upgrade
hp-faxsetup hp-printsettings hp-wificonfig
hp-firmware hp-probe
hp-info hp-query
You get more info on each of them using the --help option.

Thanks for the reply, svantoviit.

Unfortunately, I seem to have none of the things you listed.

Which menu should "HP Device Manager" appear under?

Also, what's the full directory path to those other commands you mentioned?

Perhaps something is missing from my system, but I don't know what other package(s) to install. When I do a search in Rigo for "hp-toolbox", or "hp-setup, or "HP Device Manager", Rigo finds nothing.

just install it:

Code: Select all

# equo i -a hplip
or via Rigo

Weird. I did indeed install hplip via Rigo earlier (or so I thought). It seemed to be downloading heaps of glibc and kde stuff and took hours. Maybe something went awry and the hplip install didn't complete properly.

Anyway, I just re-tried to install hplip via Rigo, and this time it did so successfully within minutes.
Dunno what went wrong before.

Thanks again.
