once chrooted in, you can check the log files /var/log/

From the issues I have been seeing, the eselect opengl command has fixed the issue. Hopefully a clue in the log files

Hello, Wolfden. As you likely read from my previous posts, "eselect opengl set ati" is no longer needed since manipulations have produced "eselect opengl list" to produce "ati" as the selected target. Therefore, this is not the cause of my issue.

I have chrooted in, and have looked at the most recent contents of /var/log:
Code: Select all
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  root      29421 May 12 17:43 Xorg.0.log.old
-rw-r----- 1 root  root      26694 May 12 18:06 dmesg
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  root      29355 May 12 18:06 Xorg.0.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  root     428350 May 12 18:06 kdm.log
-rw------- 1 root  root    1287620 May 12 18:06 messages
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  root     166922 May 12 18:06 rc.log
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root  utmp     298368 May 12 18:06 wtmp

I am not adept at this task. What would you like me to do? From "early" in kdm.log there appears to be some backtraces along with statements such as
Code: Select all
kdmgreet(10397)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): No time zone information obtained from ktimezoned
Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
klauncher(10512) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server.
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
kdmgreet(10399)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize()
D-Bus call failed:  "Not connected to D-Bus server"

kdmgreet(10399)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): No time zone information obtained from ktimezoned

but I can't tell if this was from before or after I fixed the "eselect opengl ati" issue.

From much later in the kdm.log file I can see what follows repeated frequently:
Code: Select all

klauncher(6771) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server.
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
kdmgreet(6410)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize()

It is late here now and I must end my day. Please provide suggestions for what you would like me to additionally provide. Again, I am not adept at this form of troubleshooting, but I'll do my best to fulfill any advice you offer.

Thank you very much.

After update DM and console term fail to start [Solved]

Postby VolvoBirkenstock » Tue May 14, 2013 3:51

I very recently posted this issue into the Newbies forum and am placing a pointer to that post here, hoping that a few eyes here will know how to address this problem. I'm getting nowhere fast and am without my desktop.

Thank you very much in advance.

You're actually cross posting, which is very bad.

I'm sorry. I apologize. Is there any way I can delete this post? (And I am pretty desperate, too.)

Re: Updated today and now fails to boot

Postby nickdanger » Tue May 14, 2013 6:59

I am using an ATI 7850 GPU with proprietary (fglrx) drivers. When I updated to Sabayon 13.06 with kernel 3.8.10 (Gnome 64 bit) I had the problem described here (no DM, no terminal window). I booted the live DVD, opened a terminal window, became SU, mounted the Logical Volume lv_root, chroot as Fitzcarraldo described, and then eselect opengl set ati. Exit chroot, umount, lv_root, shutdown now -h, then rebooted and everything was back to normal.

NIE MA potrzeby chrootowania

wlaczamy pc jak sie wlacza grub to na opcji sabayona naciskamy "e" otworzy sie mozliwosc edycji parametrow startowych
zjezdzamy strzalkami na nasz kernel czyli np linux /kernel-genkernel-x86_64-3.8.0-sabayon ro dopisujemy w dowolnym miejscu po ro gentoo=nox spacja potem wciskamy ctrl x odpala sie sabayon zamiast wlaczac ixy wyladujemy w konsoli
logujemy sie na root i dajemy eselect opengl set ati

i juz 30 sekund.. polecam czytac manuale

eee i forgot its not polish forum xD sory

u dont need to use chroot at all

when u start your pc in grub select sabayon version u want to start push e
scroll down to linux /kernel-genkernel-x86_64-3.8.0-sabayon ro or similar after ro type space gentoo=nox space
push ctrl x
sabayon will start in text mode no x so no hang up
login as root than type : eselect opengl set ati
than reboot and start sabayon normally
thanx and RTFM
