Youtube Issues

Postby Bhaelfur » Sat May 11, 2013 1:41

Hello. I installed Sabayon 13.04 a couple days ago (GNOME version) and I've had issues with videos on Youtube. The buffer will suddenly reset without any provocation, and then the video will abruptly end and go to the next video in the playlist (almost as if I was disconnected from the net.) It does not do this on my Windows machine, and it did not do this with the previous distro I had on this machine (CrunchBang.) Switching the quality delays this, and it takes longer for this to happen if I'm in 480 instead of 720.

Things I have tried:
Browsers - Firefox, Chromium, and Opera, all have the same issue.
Network - wired connection, wireless conection, airplane mode on and off.
Reinstalled Adobe Flash - version 11.2.202.280.
Switched Hardware Acceleration on and off.
Tried a plugin that used HTML 5 instead of Flash, same issue.

Computer is a HP Envy 17, not sure exact model number. I should be able to track this down later.

I'm at the end of my rope here. I haven't been using Linux very long, but I can follow directions. Any ideas, Sabayon community?

Thanks in advance!

I was going to suggest switching hardware acceleration off, until I saw that you already tried that. Just out of curiosity, can you download the youtube videos and play them back normally in VLC, or totem, or smplayer? (Requires youtube downloader). From a root prompt:
equo install youtube-dl

Just to follow on from dave_64's post, choose the Flash format rather than mp4 or webm. For example, if I wanted to download the video at address https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1sigYjNQFA then I would do:

Code: Select all
$ youtube-dl -F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1sigYjNQFA
[youtube] Setting language
[youtube] v1sigYjNQFA: Downloading video webpage
[youtube] v1sigYjNQFA: Downloading video info webpage
[youtube] v1sigYjNQFA: Extracting video information
Available formats:
37   :   mp4   [1080x1920]
22   :   mp4   [720x1280]
45   :   webm   [720x1280]
35   :   flv   [480x854]
44   :   webm   [480x854]
34   :   flv   [360x640]
18   :   mp4   [360x640]
43   :   webm   [360x640]
5   :   flv   [240x400]
17   :   mp4   [144x176]
$  youtube-dl -f 35 -o MARISA_MONTE_-_O_Que_Você_Quer_Saber_De_Verdade.flv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1sigYjNQFA
[youtube] Setting language
[youtube] v1sigYjNQFA: Downloading video webpage
[youtube] v1sigYjNQFA: Downloading video info webpage
[youtube] v1sigYjNQFA: Extracting video information
[download] Destination: MARISA_MONTE_-_O_Que_Você_Quer_Saber_De_Verdade.flv
[download] 100.0% of 37.32M at  419.43k/s ETA 00:00

BTW, youtube-dl is a great app.!

Downloaded videos work normally with VLC. EDIT: I saved them in FLV format and it plays back with no problems with VLC.

Isn't the HP Envy 17 quite a recent model with a decent specification? If it is, the problem you are seeing is surprising. Do you experience the same problem if you boot e.g. a SL KDE LiveDVD or a SL Xfce LiveDVD and play a YouTube video? I.e. is this problem peculiar to SL GNOME 3? I don't have GNOME 3 installed, so am not able to check myself. Also, have you tried to see what is the effect of clearing the browser's cache? Does it then take longer for the problem to occur?

This issue is quite surprising. It definitely worked on CrunchBang, and I'm sure it worked fine with Ubuntu 12.04. Pulling up my syetem details, I have 8 GB of RAM, an Intel® Core™ i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 4 processor (I'm assuming that means quadcore), and Intel® Ivybridge Mobile for a GPU (ATI HD7850M.)

I'll check the other environments tonight/tomorrow; I'm at work and count download those versions.

Same here, Sabayon 13.04 64 bits, Mate Desktop.

Youtube stops buffering, sometimes makes a dark transparency on videos when not being played on other flash like videos (not in Youtube). I think was the only one with this kind of problem but maybe is something related to flash-player version?

But if it is related to the version of Flash, why does it work fine on my machines? YouTube works fine with adobe-flash-11.2.202.280 and 11.2.202.285 in KDE on my main laptop running Gentoo, and YouTube works fine with adobe-flash-11.2.202.280 on both my laptops running SL with Xfce. So there is probably another reason. I still don't have a clue why you two are experiencing this, but do you also see the problem if you play YouTube videos using Minitube instead of a Web browser? If you have not already installed it:

Code: Select all
equo install minitube

Minitube doesn't work at all for me. I can't watch any videos using it. I let it sit loading a video for a half hour at 360p. A description popped up instantly, and the white buffer bar at the bottom stops near the end, then nothing for that half hour.

I don't think my issue is with Flash. I disabled Flash and forced Youtube to use HTML5 and I get the same issue. I just can't pinpoint the problem, and lack the know-how to figure it out. I have yet to try another flavor of Sabayon, sorry.

Well i have similiar problems. If i watch a stream with flash like this one : http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/3732 ... hsnap-110/ the playback stops after 15 mins or so and its not buffering any more. It sometimes helps to just reload the page and start again whrere it stopped but that cant be a reolution.

My specs : Intel Ivybridge I5
4 GB Ram
Intel HD4000
Sabayon XFCE 64 Bit
Using Firefox 20.0.1
