Whoops, I forgot a couple of things (easy to do when one is working from memory in the middle of the night):

1. Check if the file /etc/make.conf exists. Edit it as root user and add the following line at the end of it:

Code: Select all
ACCEPT_LICENSE="*"

If you do not know how to edit a file as root user, do the following in a Terminal window instead:

Code: Select all
$ su
Password: <-- Enter the root user's password
# echo 'ACCEPT_LICENSE="*"' >> /etc/make.conf

(Notice the single quotes added at each end of the ACCEPT_LICENSE="*" in that command.)

2. Modify the Portage 'merge' command as follows:

Code: Select all
USE="-servicetools mx430" emerge -1v =cnijfilter-3.80::sabayon =cnijfilter-drivers-3.70::sabayon

(If your PC has a 32-bit CPU then don't include the "-servicetools". If it has a 64-bit CPU then include the "-servicetools".)

I'll update my earlier post accordingly.

Give that a go. It may fall over somewhere else, in which case post the error message(s).

I don't know how to edit a file so I used the echo command above then the modified merge command. It's still getting the same readout "Failed Running aclocal !" No change.

Yikes, this is getting very technical. It's a shame you're having so much trouble. Anyway, I found the following: Gentoo Wiki - Known Problems. I am not sure how much latitude you have in the case of SL, as many of the system files cannot be upgraded or downgraded as that would then break something else. You don't have as much flexibility as a source-based (albeit more complicated) Linux distribution. Anyway, try the following:

Code: Select all
WANT_AUTOMAKE="1.12" USE="-servicetools mx430" emerge -1v =cnijfilter-3.80::sabayon =cnijfilter-drivers-3.70::sabayon

The success of that will depend on whether you have sys-devel/automake-1.12.6 installed.

If you don't have automake-1.12.6 installed by SL, you could try to install it via Portage. Automake is one of the packages that is 'slotted', meaning that several versions of the same package can be installed simultaneously. But have a go at that command I posted first, just in case. If it turns out you don't have automake-1.12.6 installed, I'll tell you how to install it via Portage.

Doesn't look like it...

It is listed as something I can install with Rigo.

I went ahead and installed it via Rigo and then ran the WANT_AUTOMAKE... command and it seems to have worked, no error messages! Gonna go see if the filter works now..

Hmmmm... getting closer, that almost seemed to work. Now CUPS doesn't say "filter failed" anymore, it says the job was successful and completed, but the printer will only say "please wait awhile" for a moment and then resets itself without actually doing anything. So there's "some" communication going on at least. This is just for trying to print a "test page".

If I didn't have my win 7 partition this would irritate me, but being a newbie learning new things it's almost fun. :wink:
