update + kernel-switcher now no X, segfault in fglrx[Solved]

Postby mlm » Sun Apr 28, 2013 19:12

Hi, on my SL11 system last night I did a ringo-based update followed by kernel-switcher to 3.8.5. Reboot and no X login. Install of sabayon-sources did not help. eselect of the opengl, bzimage, kernel did not help.

During boot I see the following messages:
"drm/i810 does not support SMP"
"fbcon_dcor failed to open"

During kernel-switcher I see "CONFIG_DRM must be disabled or compiled as a module for direct rendering"
"gcc: could not locate i680-pc-linux-gnu-cpp"

Booting to cl and using startx I get:

You asked, "What do I need to do to make X happy again?". I don't know, but you might take a look here:

I don't know anything about ati cards, and their "issues". But it looks like you may be using ati, so, there might be something in that forum post that will get you going again. Or, maybe somebody else knows exactly what you need to do and will tell you an easy way to fix it. Good luck!

What video card are you using? At a root prompt, type and enter:
lspci
Locate the line that starts with "VGA" (make and model should be in that line somewhere).
What is your DE (KDE?, Gnome?)
Is it 32-bit sabayon?, or 64-bit?

Add nomodeset to boot parameters. There is a news in the notice board for that also...

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Juniper [Radeon HD 5700 Series]
XFCE. 32 bit.
I have nomodeset as a grub argument. That's in the walk-through linked above.

Given that the problem is in loading fglrx, is there a simple way to stop loading it and use the open source drivers temporarily?

I am not knowledgeable about ati cards...at all. But, you said in your original post that you installed the 3.8.5 kernel. Then you said you followed the instructions at:
viewtopic.php?f=56&t=28808
verbatim. However, the instructions there assume the use a 3.8.8 kernel. You were told there to make adjustments appropriate to your situation. You might want to double check that, changing the 3.8.8 to 3.8.5 on those steps in the procedure. Just a guess. Hopefully, an ati expert will jump in here and get you going.

If I understand them correctly, those instructions include installing the 3.8.8 kernel and switching to boot it. I just went through them again in case the instructions or repos had been updated with no change in output or error message. I did notice that the commands to remove the old ati-drivers didn't work and I had to select the right packages by hand.

I am happy to report that the addition of removing x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.14 to the walkthrough fixed the issue, and sabayon is graphically booting again!
