kernel configuration? [Solved]

Postby heathen » Fri Apr 26, 2013 7:53

Updated kernel for the first time tonight and during the course of installation this popped up:
Code: Select all
* Checking for suitable kernel configuration options...
 *   CONFIG_B43:    should not be set. But it is.
 *   CONFIG_SSB:    should not be set. But it is.
 *   CONFIG_MAC80211:    should not be set. But it is.
 * Please check to make sure these options are set correctly.
 * Failure to do so may cause unexpected problems.

which pretty much garnered a "deer in the headlights" look from me. Is there something I should be doing about this? And what?
Is this just a "equo confupdate" or is there more to it than that?

They look liike the kind of messages and comments that are generated when compiling from source code, and are incomprehensible to most of us. If the installation fails, or stalls out, the comments and warnings might be significant, but if the installation was successful, you can safely assume the messages are not significant, at least for us, the end users. The developers might inspect these messages if they make a kernel that doesn't work right. If your new kernel survives a reboot, you had a successful kernel upgrade. Congrats!

Sweet, thankyou! Yes, it rebooted great, and Rigo downloaded some more updates this morning and it still is working even better than before, so it looks like all is well. :)

They look to me like the build output from the package net-wireless/broadcom-sta, and are non-fatal messages as the broadcom-sta package must have been built OK or your Entropy upgrade wouldn't be downloading its binary and displaying those messages. Either a) the b43, ssb and mac80211 modules have been blacklisted in one of your config files, or b) the broadcom-sta module has been blacklisted in that config file, or c) your machine is not even using a Broadcom wireless controller and another module is loaded too and is the driver for that wireless controller.

Just for information, you can see which modules are actually loaded by opening a Konsole/Terminal window, logging in as root user, and entering the command lsmod (short for 'list loaded modules').

Yeah, I'm watching those messages in general more carefully and report it on Sabayon's Bugzilla, just in case it causes some trouble.
So they are better informed.

Most the times they have nothing to mean and are even expected.
But I'm not completely seeing through it, yet.

Yep. You can see from the output that you have the open-source Broadcom module loaded, not the closed-source broadcom-sta (Boardcom Linux STA) module which is surplus to your requirements.
