I don't know but it does not seem to be working. I will reboot now and see.
Thanks in any case.

For now I don't have a ready solution, from what is in output of terminal I can say that in chroot you apparently don't have net connection.. I'll write it as soon as I'll have time/be sure how to properly set up network (of course there is guide for that on gentoo.org - http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/, in handbook there is part on setup without GUI, but from experience I know that it may be a little hard to understand.. especially by someone who isn't highly technical)

Douglas_E_Knapp wrote:I have not tested all this yet but stop apologizing! You are the only one even trying to help me. Without you I would be staring at a dead computer without a clue.

It's not like I have a clue. All I did was merely providing instructions to make possible doing something to restore system to usable shape by trying to:

a) try simplest solution - generate grub.cfg, since this is first thing that is used for mounting anything and case looks like there is problem with mounting after "initial mounting"
b) since that didn't work out because of problem with something else, next step is upgrading software, including kernel, with hope that it'll help..

that is all I'm probably able to help with, it's not some amazingly_expert_like_knowledge..

I don't have really much knowledge about Linux at all, since I'm merely using if for about 2 years, and by helping you I have my skills tested and developed, so it's not like I don't have anything form helping you.

I think I will take a new approach. I will copy home to sdb and then reformat and re-install sba. It will mean reinstalling some software but what the heck. I will wait, in case you think this is a bad idea.
Thanks again.
BTW I know what you mean about helping. I did a lot of helping with blender 3d. A great program but hard as heck the first year.

Oh, yeah, code- and quote-boxes are appreciated, but you know that by now.
Maybe you should open a new post (or asking for moving this via the report-button (! in a triangle)) in another Shed then Beginners … In case it is not moved, link this thread in your opening post.

I thought about about proposing to reinstall system, and since it's acceptable for you to do it... IMO reinstalling system is only a option in a case when it can be done (no important data lost) and repairing may take too much time (which is clearly a case here). From my experience it takes usually up to 2 days to fully reinstall system (along witch needed software, configuring, etc.). My advice: there is a whole weekend to do it, I don't know how to help, only can try, and if you need a functional environment in which you can work without unnecessary (for you) "playing in" repairing... Simply do it.
