No graphics after update [Solved]

Postby ags40 » Tue Mar 26, 2013 21:38

Sorry if this too basic. I have installed LS10. Works fine. After I update and reboot goes to a non graphics screen with lots of text. Is it my NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE with driver 304.37? What can I do to go to graphics again?

The problem is easily fixed, but first, I wonder if you installed sabayon X or sabayon 11, because X version is 6 months old already, and 11 is only weeks old, and therefore, much easier to update/upgrade. You might want to consider reinstalling with version 11.
The graphics problem will persist in version 11, so it still needs to be addressed.
From the black screen, or whatever screen you get, use a key combo of:
ctrl + alt + f1
This should give you a login prompt, and you can login as root and give your root password to get logged in.
Once logged in, at the command prompt, type and enter:
equo install nvidia-drivers-304.64#$(uname -r) --ask

Now you can type:
reboot
and see if you get a graphical interface.
To make the repairs permanent through subsequent upgrades requires editing a file. First, see if installing the drivers gives you a graphical interface.

Thanks very much. I will try re-installing with version 11 and I'll let you know. Thanks again.

Ehm … this is not meant as thread hijacking, but be careful.

I have comparable hardware (see the signature) and at the moment unable to get further than the boot splash menu (where you can choose Live mode or install and such). Trying SL 11 Daily Mate now.

By the way, there are several threads concerning black screens at the moment … maybe the problem is deeper …

Good points, Ryuno-Ki, and considering ags40 has already done an upgrade of his sabayon X, it would surely be worth the effort to try the procedure I gave on the X version. If you are fully upgraded, you are using 11. I can't remember how old this installation is, but it probably goes back to version 9, but being fully upgraded, it is now running 11.

I should have added that there is another possibility, which I noticed a few weeks ago regarding a black screen after upgrading version X. At the end of the upgrade, you are encouraged to remove unneeded packages. Do NOT accept this offer unless you know how to do a dependency check on those packages. In one case, it removed large portions of KDE, and KDE had to be reinstalled.

The computer is old enough and for a NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE, that has over 10 years of design behind it, just a driver 'legacy', such as the .173.
One of this (x86):
packages-nonfree/x86/5/x11-drivers:nvidia-drivers-173.14.36#3.2.0-sabayon~3.tbz2
packages-nonfree/x86/5/x11-drivers:nvidia-drivers-173.14.36#3.3.0-sabayon~3.tbz2
packages-nonfree/x86/5/x11-drivers:nvidia-drivers-173.14.36#3.4.0-sabayon~3.tbz2
packages-nonfree/x86/5/x11-drivers:nvidia-drivers-173.14.36#3.5.0-sabayon~3.tbz2
packages-nonfree/x86/5/x11-drivers:nvidia-drivers-173.14.36#3.6.0-sabayon~5.tbz2
packages-nonfree/x86/5/x11-drivers:nvidia-drivers-173.14.36#3.7.0-sabayon~1.tbz2
packages-nonfree/x86/5/x11-drivers:nvidia-drivers-173.14.36#3.8.0-sabayon~2.tbz2

After installing the nvidia driver for the installed kernel, mask it with:
Code: Select all
#equo mask >x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.36
In the future there will be no update driver nvidia.
Ciao

P.S: kernel-switcher is deprecate in this case IMHO

I'm going to be brief. Using an old Clonezilla Sabayon image I put in practice all the suggestions you have offered me. In the end IT WORKED! Thank you very much to all you. I'm writing this from my updated LS.
I still have a question on this regard what should I do to prevent that Entropy stops offering me to update to NVIDIA 313.18 ? Thx again.

It depends on which driver you installed and works well for you. I suggested a 304 driver, and belcocco advised the 173 driver. He also gave you the command to make it permanent through subsequent upgrades by masking it. If you are using the 304 driver, you can add these 3 lines to your /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask file to make the change permanent.
>=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-310.19
>=media-video/nvidia-settings-310.19
>=x11-drivers/nvidia-userspace-310.19
You will have to be root (superuser/administrative) to edit that file.
Which driver did you install?

Tks for your fast response. I used your suggestion 304.84. Is there anyone newer that would work?
I tried belcocco's: equo mask >x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.36, but entropy keeps suggesting upgrade. Of course I used the 304.84 in the command.
