Installer menu items are ineffective (KDE 11 32 bit)

Postby ender » Thu Mar 07, 2013 0:28

Hello. I did an md5sum check on the downloaded iso:

Code: Select all
$ cd /data/isos
$ md5sum -c *md5*
Sabayon_Linux_11_x86_K.iso: OK

The disk I burnt returned the correct md5sum: 3123a9d06542aa4806374fe7cc31493c

I tried these options on the menu displayed when the disk was booted:
Start Sabayon ...
Start Sabayon media center
Installation (twice) [installation of Sabayon]
safe mode
check disc

I looked at the further options (F5) and tried one item on the menu (I forget which) after selecting the first of the further options (disabled acpi or something) but I doubt those options would affect the check disc item.

In each case, the reader light blinked for a few seconds and stopped. The screen went blank and stayed blank. CTRL + ALT + DEL did not re-boot so I had to use the hardware re-boot button.

I gave two of the menu items (I forget which) a good 5 minutes to start doing something. No dice. This is the first time I have experienced such a problem.

I searched the forum using StartPage with the result:
Your search - host:forum.sabayon.org install disc OR disk - did not match any documents.

I also searched this topic title which produced no results.

Hello again. I got the Sabayon and install Sabayon entries to load (after selecting all or the first of the F5 options) but each time I ended up with a command line. 'startx' did nothing.

The command 'install --help' produced a lot of output, some of which scrolled off the top of the screen. In the dark ages there was a parameter to stop that happening. Does anyone remember what it is?

Am I really limited to installing from the command line?

If you haven't already (and a lot don't) I would try the top one..

Start Sabayon ...
Start Sabayon media center
Installation (twice) [installation of Sabayon]
safe mode
check disc

And let it boot to the desktop, then click the install icon and go from there.

Thanks. I don't understand. Do you mean to select the top F5 option and then try each of the commands you list separately? I tried that with one of the menu items (Installation IIRC) and got a command line.

BTW, for anyone reading this, I found this thread on how to limit terminal output. If I have to use the command line to install I think I'll abandon the exercise. I don't want to nuke my partitions by making a mistake.

I'm saying what happens when you simply insert the Sabayon disk you burnt and just let it run till it gets to the live desktop (whatever you have chosen, kde, gnome, xfce, etc) ?

OK, thanks. I never thought of allowing the default to run. I'll try that.

Hello again. I allowed the time out with the same result as selecting an option. The dvd reader flickered briefly and stopped. The screen went blank. I waited for over 2 minutes and nothing happened.

Other types of boot-CDs are working fine?

On default boot entry of Sabayon LiveDVD menu press the TAB key on you keyboard: this will let you modify the boot string. Ok, delete everything but the kernel part (sorry, I cannot explain you well 'cause I'm going from memory) and try booting.
First of all you could set ide=nodma parameters.
If no results, do little testing with these boot options
Code: Select all
showopts
apm=off
noresume edd=off
powersaved=off
nohz=off
highres=off
processor.max_cstate=1
nomodeset
x11failsafe

Also read the Sabayon wiki about boot parameters: http://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title=En:Sabayon_Linux#Boot_parameters_and_workarounds_for_problematic_Hardware
