Which pdf reader on SL 11 Xfce? And where is foxit? [Solved]

Postby LichPortal » Wed Mar 06, 2013 5:48

Hi all.

I'm new to Sabayon/Gentoo (previously Ubuntu+Gnome), but decided to try Sabayon-11 after upgrading to latest Ubuntu and finding that I can't stand Unity.

OK, so I've installed Sabayon-11 (Xfce variant).

Normally I use evince to read pdf documents, but it's not in the standard Xfce setup (of course). So instead of simply installing it via Rigo I figured I'd take this opportunity to try other readers. What is the default/recommended pdf reader in the Xfce environment?

Elsewhere, I've see FoxitReader mentioned favorably, but Rigo doesn't find it. Is there some other way I can install it?

[I also thought about Okular, but like Evince, it pulls in a lot of non-Xfce dependencies.]

Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

On the XFCE site they recommend xpdf.

You can find some inspiration here: http://www.pdfreaders.org/

…and in portage too:
Code: Select all

[N] app-text/gsview (4.9): gsView PostScript and PDF viewer
[N] app-text/gv ((~)3.7.3.90): Viewer for PostScript and PDF documents using Ghostscript

As you can see, you should be able to install FoxitReader from the sunrise overlay.

You can choose Adobe Reader as well, it's called acroread in the package manager.

Since you're new to Sabayon, you may fill a package request and mention the Sunrise Overlay there. If the developers have some time, they will create a package. You can use your forum login data for Bugzilla.

Just to mention: Firefox 19 has its built-in PDF reader

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I didn't find xpdf in Rigo.

TBH, I don't fully understand the rigo/entropy/portage subtleties. And yes, I did read the sticky thread about it. I got the impression that I should be using Rigo and ignoring the rest.
Is that impression wrong?

Ryuno-Ki wrote:[...] you may fill a package request and mention the Sunrise Overlay there.

Hmm, ok. I think I get the picture. Thanks.

But... I've become used to Synaptic on Ubuntu, and I now realize I rely
on having a distribution with similar capabilities and availability of commonly
used software. I thought Rigo would give similar functionality, but perhaps
I don't properly understand the relationship between the Rigo repositories
(Sabayon-specific?) and the other repositories for more generic Gentoo?

Matte88 wrote:Just to mention: Firefox 19 has its built-in PDF reader.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I installed Firefox a few days ago via Rigo
but it seems to be version 18.0.1.

Firefox 19 seems to now be the default download on the Mozilla website,
but I guess it hasn't yet reached the default Rigo repository?

Anyway....

Now I'm wondering whether Xfce is the wrong choice for me at this time.
I used KDE 6 years ago and was underwhelmed. I've been using Gnome on Ubuntu,
and it's been... ok... I guess, though I didn't like the major changes that seemed
to appear every time I did a system upgrade.

Maybe I should try KDE again? Is there an easy way to changeover from Xfce to
KDE without doing a total Sabayon re-install?

Thanks again.

xpdf isn't maintained so it's been dropped. See here:http://dilfridge.blogspot.com/2012/02/what-about-my-precious-xpdf.html

firefox 19 does have a pdf viewer and it will be available to install via the repo fairly soon.

If you want to install kde alongside xcfe that's simple!

Code: Select all
#equo install kdebase-meta

After that finishes, at login you should be able to choose kde or xcfe.

Thanks very much. I'll give that a try.

Don't you have epdfview installed in SL 11 Xfce? It's on the LiveDVD and was installed to the HDD of the two laptops on which I'm running SL Xfce.

app-text/epdfview-0.1.8-r1

No. There's no epdfview in my default PATH. I didn't do anything unusual during the installation -- I just let the installer have its way with me.

Applications Menu > Office > ePDFViewer

No. I just get several Libreoffice selections, but no mention of ePDFViewer.

Also, when I search for "epdfview" in Rigo, it comes back empty, so apparently my Rigo knows nothing about epdfview.

OK, I 've now installed KDE as you suggested and played around with it for a few hours.
So far, I'm getting a vaguely better feeling than I did with Xfce, though there's still a few
things I've yet to figure out. But I'll post a separate thread on those if necessary.
Probably I'll install okular tomorrow and try it out.

Cheers.
