How to install print drivers manually

Post by penguin7009 » Sat Feb 16, 2013 16:43

Hi all and thnak you for this great place to use and discuss Sabayon Linux

I have the .deb .rpm and .tar files for my canon imageclass D480 Laser printer. I always have to manually install these because no linux distro has them. Its never been a problem because I have the right drivers for any distro.

Now I've moved up a step with Sabayon and I'm lost. Can someone guide me on how to install these manually on Sabayon 11 mate edition :?:

Thanks a heap
penguin

Hi Butch, thanks for the reply. Yes I have the .ppds that I need however it keeps asking for a third program that has something to do with uf2ll coding?

I guess what I'm asking is how to install a tar file in Sabayon?

^ The usual way but I'm still not sure why you need to. Are you saying that both the original methods aren't working for you. In other words, either one of those methods (installing a printer and downloading a ppd) should pick it up automatically. What's the exact message you are getting?

It tries to install the ppd and then fails with a message that it needs "pstoufr2pcpa" filter. That file is in the .tar file but does not install when I select the .ppds. So I'm guessing unless I install and compile it that file will not be included. I'm also having the same problem with my Brother mfc8890dw.

Thanks, penguin

Looks like it's a long standing issue with the driver, across various distros, doesn't just affect that particular model either. But before you do what you're going to do make sure you try it using a wired connection first (if you aren't already) and see if gives you what you want. Some folk swear that "UFR II Printer Driver for Linux Version 2.50" driver works for them.
