EN-Wiki Beginners-Guide

Postby batvink » Thu Feb 07, 2013 18:14

There's a Beginners-Guide on the Sabayon-Wiki.

Through the Wiki, on several places you can find Documentations and visual tours about how to install, and use Sabayon Linux.
To give a more overview, all those articles are merged, into one synoptic page.

For those who are new to Sabayon-Linux, but have no experience,
and still want to try Sabayon.

The guide is focussed on the install process of SabayonLinux.

French page done :
http://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title ... ners_Guide

There are many sub pages that should be translated and links updated then.

Huge work to maintain all those links in différents languages.

The page itself has some good informations but I would like to add more details but I didnt too keep close to the original documentation.

yeah. i agree there are too many links.
Allthough those links (pages) already exist,
i think they have to be rewritten and put/implement into the beginners guide.
ending up with as little links as possible, so the new user won't have to follow links
with the possibility that he loses the actual page he's at....

But on the other hand, implementing all the links will result in one very, very long guide.
Some links are a guide on their own, and i think they must remain a link in the beginners guide,
or else it will be too long....

Hm, from my point of view, many topics are already covered in the FAQs also …
We should find a clear solution here, so to keep less articles up-to-date.
Speaking of the FAQ: It should be restructered in my opionion. A rookie don't know, who wolfden is …
Maybe we can divide the topics in question between both, FAQ and Beginners Guide?

I adjusted it a little.
yes, the FAQ is a bit cluttered, can be restructured., and for sure some parts can be moved to the beginners guide, for example.

In my opinion, when new users come to the Wiki, first thing they're looking for is some sort of a beginners guide.
But of course the FAQ is important too., and they can coexist.

Proposal: Use the FAQ for pre-installation stuff (requirements, DE flavors, …) and the Beginners Guide for installation and post-installation instruction.
Look, many distro sites collect answers to questions around the distro on a FAQ page.
I think, we measure up to the reader's expectation this way …

yes. that sounds good.
When looking to other Wiki's they're using the same approach.
not that we have to follow that, though... :-)

speaking of that:
We COULD stand out from the rest.
i've found something interesting....
Our Wiki is based on MediaWiki., which uses php
TWiki however, is a Enterprise Web 2.0 platform, uses Perl, and and it looks very interesting to me.....
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/TWiki
http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Codev/ComparisonOfMediaWikiToTWiki
http://twiki.org/

I simply want to add a subsection to the Wiki's FAQ, but seems to be impossible; i keep getting a "Internal Server Error" which is indeed very annoying...
Now, i didn't investigated this further, and i sure don't know if it can easily be running on the Sabayon servers,
without adjusting too many, or if Fabio is willing to switch to TWiki,
but i sure like the idea.

Question is, IF Fabio wants to switch, can our Wiki easily be converted....

As far as I can tell from IRC, TheV00d00 is the right person to ask.
I've played with the thought to move away from PHP/MediaWiki also.
I guess, it would be possible to write a script to move the articles ...
