Wireless modem won't connect after update yesterday.

Postby dirigible » Wed Jan 23, 2013 4:30

My modem is a Huawei E173 wireless broadband. All the settings look the same as they where before but when I try to connect, Network Manager tells me “connection failed” or words to that effect.

It won't connect in Sabayon KDE or Fluxbox but still works under Mint13 KDE.
I've noticed something interesting though. If I reboot from Sabayon to LM (modem stays powered up) it will also fail in LM until I power cycle it by unplugging and then plugging it back in.

Does this suggest it is being incorrectly initialised by Sabayon after yesterdays update?
What should I do?

Hi dirigible,

if i understood correct, your problem is that you cannot connect on the internet when you use the Sabayon.
How to try to connect in your router via wireless or with ethernet cable? First check both.
Then open one terminal and give the below commands:
Code: Select all
ifconfig -a && route -n

and copy-paste the result here
Before you can give the above commands in the terminal try to read what these commands does.
Code: Select all
man ifconfig

Code: Select all
man route

No does not need to post the output from LM13.

Where is your wireless card oeo? Please help me to help you:)
Do you want to connect wireless in your router?
As i said in previous post did you try to connect via ethernet?
What is your machine?Desktop or Laptop?
Which version of Sabayon do you use?And which version of Kernel. The command for check it is 'uname -a'
Your wireless network card is pci or usb?
From bios settings there is one choice 'Network Boot' is it enable?
If you already know the model for your Network Card, please post it.

I think that if lspci command does not detect your wireless card the problem does not come from the O/S but it's a hardware problem, or as i said something wrong with the BIOS.

Sorry, I did not make it clear.
Huawei E173 USB wireless modem is my only means of connecting.
No router.
No ethernet.
USB only.
Desktop PC.
Sabayon KDE.
Code: Select all
Linux robs.desktop 3.5.0-sabayon #1 SMP Sun Nov 11 10:31:31 UTC 2012 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6850 @ 3.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

BIOS settings have not been altered for over 2 years.

Same hardware works under LM13 KDE.
LM partition also has some updates pending. I've not yet allowed it incase this turns out to be a KDE problem common to both distros.
Code: Select all
Linux robert-desktop 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

A long shot here: Are you a member of the uucp group?

Code: Select all
usermod -G uucp -a rob

I imagine the above command is intended to add me to a group called uucp.
Thanks for the suggestion but the same problem remains.

Think I'll wait a few months then download a fresh iso and try again.
