Cannot boot after upgrade - Freeze

Postby dudumomo » Tue Jun 05, 2012 17:21

Hi there,

I did an update of my system with sudo equo upgrade and then reboot my system.
However, I cannot have access to the window manager anymore. The system is stuck right after the boot sequence.

If I press F2 for information, nothing special, all in green, and then new page with nothing...waiting for something to display on the "F2 screen" but none.

I can still have access to the system with the rescue mode, but was not able to understand my problem.
(Xorg.log doesn't provide me error)

Hope you can help me solve this issue.

Thank you

It will help if you can give some information about your system and which version of Sabayon you have installed. This can happen with a mismatch between the kernel and the video drivers. Have you tried, as root,
Code: Select all
eselect opengl list
to see if your video card is selected? Did you do
Code: Select all
 equo conf update
after the upgrade? Other possible fixes to try are
Code: Select all
equo libtest
and
Code: Select all
equo deptest
.

I had a similar problem which was related to the kernel and video drivers.

My solution is given here: http://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=27283

Thanks for your info.

However, I am unable to reach the command line except in Rescue Mode. (But read-only)
How can I have write rights?

Thank you !

Hi there,
after the system booted normaly, you can switch to an login shell with Ctrl+Alt+F2. You can change to it anytime. So when your Desktop freezes, change to the shell and kill the freeze-causing program. To change back to the default press Ctrl+Alt+F7.

cheers

Ah....forgot about it...

In fact, I have reinstall Sabayon as I was impatient :p

However same thing.

In fact I think it is linked to my ati-drivers.

After a fresh install, impossible to start X because "No Screen detected". (I use a TV with HDMI connection)
So I've modified the Xorg, to use the driver fglrx instead.

I've been able to start X, but no Gnome3 and my windows lag.

What should I do next in fact?

For info, opengl is in ATI ==> Should be good.
And I have an ATI 6850.

Any idea?
Thank you.

You can start X but no Gnome 3, seems confusing? So a different desktop environment works or you get to the GDM screen? I suggest looking into log files

Have you checked the contents of /etc/conf.d/xdm to see what display manager is specified?

Sorry I meant the Gnome3 is in failback mode. My bad.

I will check xdm as soon as I'm back home.

Thank you !

/etc/conf.d/xdm is set to use gdm.

Concerning the logs, I found that in Xorg.log:

Code: Select all
 DRI initialization failed
kernel module (fglrx.ko) may be missing or incompatible
2D and 3D acceleration disabled
which may explain why I do not have the full gnome 3.
